Surrey All-time XI
Let's see how this mob does against the Bajan ATXI:
Jack Hobbs
Andy Sandham
Ken Barrington
Douglas Jardine (c)
Peter May
Graham Thorpe
Alec Stewart (w)
George Lohmann
Peter Loader
Jim Laker
Alec Bedser
Hmm, they're a bit good actually.... could do with a batter who bowls seam. Maybe Rikki?

Tom Hayward was one of the greatest opening bats of all time. I think Sandham would have a quiet chuckle at being picked ahead of him. Hayward was also a decent bowler - good enough to take 100 wickets in a season.
Something similar may be said of Tom Richardson and Peter Loader. I think Jardine would have been happy to have an out and out quick in his armoury
Surrey have a very fine team, the only issue being the lack of an alrounder and all of their great bowlers being rather poor batsmen. William Lockwood was a decent bat but i can't see him forcing a place ahead of those other great bowlers and he wasn't good enough to bat six.
This means that Stewart probably has to play as the keeper which is a shame as Strudwick is one of the all time greats behind the stumps (but a poor batsman).
Bobby Abel and Tony Lock are other greats who miss out here.

Would john Edrich not come into the team ahead of the likes of Sandham, Thorpe and Jardine?

John Edrich had a second to none reputation for courage and capacity against extreme pace. I'd have him.

Yep, same here.
Hobbs
Edrich
Barrington
May*
Hayward
Alec Stewart+
Lockwood
Lohmann
Lock
Laker
Richardson
Great batting line up. Great bowling line up.
A very long tail hence the need to compromise on the keeping. Maybe Abel or Thorpe should bat at 6 and go with 4 bowlers. Lock would probably miss out. Even so the tail may be too long to allow Strudwick to take the gloves.

What's the criteria? Runs for England or runs for Surrey? If it's runs for Surrey then Ramps is a certainty ahead of Thorpie.

The criterion is how good an international player one was.
Judas is not getting in, no matter how many runs he scores for Slurry.

Herbert Strudwick - couldn't bat for toffee but possibly greatest of all keepers.

Ramps in an all-time Surrey XI? Don't make me laugh.

Re: Surrey All-time XI
I'm not happy selecting Lock, as his 1950's bowling action was clearly suspect.
When Lock himself eventually saw film of it, he hastened to alter it, and was never the same performer in England again.
His domestic Test form up to 1958 looks like that of an all time great, but he threw.

1. Loader is in my squad
2. I knew peterg would call Locky as a chucker so I left him out.
