The particular loathing of Surrey CCC ...
... seems fairly universal in England.
But it's still all a bit mysterious to me. So, could anyone explain?
I'm presuming it's summat to do with an unholy bedfellowship of the Toffs (MCC) looking down on the Sarflundeners as jumped-up chavs with cash and no class, and the ordinary folk outside London looking down on them as jumped-up wannabee city slickers with cash and no decency - and so contempt all round for the poor old Browncaps.
( Or, to put it Aesop's way: A crow found some feathers that some peacocks had moulted, and determined to move up in bird social circles, adorned himself in the fine feathers and hopped over to join the upper class. But the peacocks heard him chattering and immediately saw through the plain bird's disguise. They sent him packing with an unmerciful pecking and squawking.. The crow, his adopted finery in tatters, sighed with deep dismay and limped back to his own kind. But the other crows - whether failing to recognise the crow as one of theirs and determined to repel this interloper, or taking serious umbrage at his pretensions of finery - sent him packing with another unmerciful pecking and squawking. And so the vain crow became a homeless wanderer for his pains. ... )
A meeean, FINKABAHDITT!! - Surrey has produced a Micky Stewart and an Alex Stewart, John Edrich, Kenny Barrington, Bob Willis, Butch, Thorpey, a Bicknell and a GG Arnold, both Laker and Lock, also Bedser, Surridge and May, the mighty speed trio of Lohmann, Richardson and Lockwood, a fine batsman in Tom Hayward - not to mention some odd fella with a Berry stuck in his name. .... just a few in a long historical panoply of service to England.
Does it perhaps stem from the fact that one very prominent Surrey captain went to to public school and Oxford and kept reminding everyone in the world of his privileged class status by wearing an exclusive multicoloured cap, was a Barings banker (so, unusually, was able to trot along from the CIty to train and play many more county matches than the vast majority of cricket amateurs - i.e. all rivals for England captain at the time), was given a leg-up into a Surrey career by having his dad high up on the club's committee and pushing for him, ... and subsequently went on to carry himself around in private with exquisite imperial manners, but in public (and in play) like a right snooty hardnosed warmongering bastard in democratic, classless Australia?
There must be some sort of reason for this anti-Surrey sickness!

Re: The particular loathing of Surrey CCC ...
It's the "We are Surrey" strut that gets in my throat. It was understandable when they were winning everything in sight, but that's nigh on 15 years ago. Now it's just laughable.
They clearly are a very wealthy club - but they seem to be splashing their money on jazz hat overseas signings and hoovering up every pensionable domestic player. Compare and contrast with Sussex who also have a bit of cash behind them but invested properly in their own players as well as recruiting shrewdly from elsewhere.
It's a pity Alec Stewart isn't interested in coaching full-time, as he is "proper" Surrey.

Re: The particular loathing of Surrey CCC ...
They epitomise all that is wrong with county cricket.
1. Buying heavily into overseas "talent" - whether this be the OAP brigade (Sniffer, Drunk) or else the Yoof (Amla) - always dipping into theeir purse to drag in (short term) "Names" from foreign parts.
2. Their reluctance to invest the same money in young talent.. . they had Tom Maynard and Hamilton Brown, (both poached from other counties), yet couldn't keep either.
3. Jade f**kin' Dernback - overtattooed piece of crap.
4. Gareth Batty (their captain ffs!) - the nastiest piece of s**t on the circuit.
5. As Bas mentioned - their "strut" . . . always irritating.
6. Finally, the Stewarts . . . both of them. 'nuff said.
The only recent positives to come from that County were Butcher and Thorpey - otherwise, they really are sh*t.
Enjoy Division 2 you smarmy b**tards.

We'll see on both counts. Surrey have a way of pulling flukes out of their (heavy and full) toiletry bags.Basil wrote:
