6000 Test runs, 6000 Shield runs
For obvious reasons, it is not common for a player to have a full test cricket career and also make a major contribution in Australia's domestic first class contribution. For the last thirty years, there's consistently been an international series played concurrently with the Shield.
The names high on the Shield runmaker list, then, tend to be those who have either been solid and dependable first class players who weren't quite good enough to get a go in the Test side, or at least not good enough for long enough to keep their spot there. Alternatively, some of them might be regarded as cruelly or unfairly overlooked by national selectors.
This is a list of the contributions of all those who made 6000 Test runs AND 6000 runs in the Sheffield Shield. I've never seen a list like this before, so I was interested to compile it. Naturally it will tend to favour modern players over ancient, since back in the day there were fewer Tests AND fewer Shield matches per year.
Among those with 6000 Test runs, Langer has the most Shield runs.

Interesting list.
M Hussey might yet get there.

Ponting rarely plays Shield cricket, even when available.

On inspection it turns out that this is identical to a list of those with 6000 test runs, with Ponting and Harvey omitted.
"What, no Martin Love?"
See first post, second paragraph.

Ian Chappell must have been close too. Maybe also Bill Lawry.
