This year's numbers are bit extraordinary.
Wasn't it a popular perception that bowling stakes are getting better?

And if somene like Bhajji is this year's 2nd highest wicket taker (at however high average) then there has to be something wrong with world bowling stocks.

Yeah, surprised Bhajji took 63 wickets. Seem to have felt all year that he was distinctly average.

Ishant and Zaheer may not have taken bagful of wickets this year but they took some very important wickets at crucial junctures to fashion some of the 6 test wins India registered this year.

There's been a lot more test cricket this year than last.

I like to spell it calendar.
Some teams played an inordinate number of tests this year.

For instance, Australia only played 4 tests last year.

You are forgetting that Bhajji too took few crucial wicket. The ones I remember are wickets against SA when Kumble was injured, Zaheer was injured and Ishant had just come back from injury in that very match.
I also remember that it it was Bhajji who took the first 2 wickets at Mohali 2nd inning vs the Australians when they started all guns blazing to chase 516 runs down. Kumble was injured once again and was not playing.
I think he was very average against England towards the end of the year and was facing some technical flaws/ physical injury in his own words.
Let us hope that he recovers and improves too.

Re: 1000 test runs in a calender year
Chandan,
If you take 63 wickets in an year there are bound to be some crucial ones. I'd still say Bhajji has been very disappointing this year as we played most of our tests in home like environs. In fact if I remember correctly then only Perth and A'bad were not looking like Indian wickets, rest all were pretty much Indian style wickets.

Re: 1000 test runs in a calender year
No. of tests played from '00 till '08 in parenthesis,
'08 - 12 (47 tests)
'07 - 03 (31 tests)
'06 - 09 (46 tests)
'05 - 07 (49 tests)
'04 - 11 (51 tests)
'03 - 06 (44 tests)
'02 - 06 (55 tests)
'01 - 06 (55 tests)
'00 - 02 (46 tests)
So as can be seen no. of tests played during each year doesn't make much of a difference to no. of 1000 test runs makers in an year.

Probably the pitches. Except the one at Kanpur, I can't remember too many bowler friendly ones this year.

Innovation by batsmen too has its share in ensuring high no. of 1000 test runs in an year.
The one mastered by Tendulkar (as shown in your avatar) as well as KP's switch hit immediately come to mind.

Yup - no World Cup to fill what seemed like excruciating months of the year.
Not to mention the warm up games for that, and then later in 2007 we also had the T20 WC.

Not really, Mark Waugh was playing the dabble over slips in 1992 against the Windies pacemen. He was well known for it.

Get rid of flat pitches.
Get rid of short boundaries.
Ban India.
That should fix the problem.
