What's good about cricket these days?
Can you think of one thing that makes cricket a great game in the 21st century?
I'll start by saying almost complete TV coverage of every international match around the world. Not all of it is great to watch, but it's nice to know that there's always a game of cricket on somewhere that I can watch if I want to.

Actually playing the game and feeling, hearing and seeing the ball whistle off the middle of your bat and then scorch across the turf to the cover point boundary.

Edited for realism ... my reality anyway.
I agree with Bob. The beers afterwards are still good, too.

And now edited for my reality. Or at least the increased reality of the last season I played the game.Big_Bad_Bob wrote:Actually playing the game and feeling, hearing and seeing the ball whistle off themiddleedge of your bat and thenscorch across the turf to the cover point boundaryfly through the air directly to first slip's eagerly awaiting hands.

Been a while since I was in the nets, but I used to frickin' love the loud thunk of ball on bat that echoed around, even when playing a sturdy defensive shot.
And the FFFFZZZZZZZZ of a quicker ball rearing up.
Good times.

Cricket makes you feel more intelligent when you know all about the game.
I use "all" as loosely as possible.

Most of it, bar the incessant repercussions of thudding money in some quarters.

Re: What's good about cricket these days?
cricket continues to make life worthwhile...at the moment there are more +'s than -'s...test cricket is competitive, with no team dominant and with the Windies on the rise, ways are being found for pakistan to play cricket tho this outside Stanland...the same accommodation may need to be found for India...outside the BCCI there seems to be much good will...the 2x3 test series of Aust v SA was terrific and played in great spirit...england continues to provide great comedy in the cricket world ...a shield win for Victoria and the spoon for the NSW dubbers

Most of the above have been part of cricket since Day 1, even the allusions to bribes.

I was going to suggest "Poms are funny" but the above applies to that as well.

Surely they only came out after they retired so they are a bad thing

The thud of ball hitting stumps and the tinkle of bails as you beat the bat with a good 'un ...What's good about cricket these days?
The season's first boundary off the middle of the bat ....
Post match beer and banter....
The magic of Lord's on the first day of an Ashes test...
... and the gratifying re-assurance that the 2 tgm's won't be playing !

Re: What's good about cricket these days?
It's just the greatest game on earth...reputations being made and broken during the course of a match...watching Aus rebuild and knowing even their second-rate sides are competitive (woohoo!!)...being at Lord's - what an atmosphere - even if it was only to watch a local match and take a guided tour...watching little kids run around the local cricket grounds, with dreams of being heroes...enjoying the Cricket Calendars (if you guys can talk about batting and bowling experiences, I can talk about hunks, hehe)... realising the great Steve Waugh is as wonderful a humanitarian as he was a cricketer...just being at the games eg. the SCG, filled with thousands of screaming fans, (so long as those around me don't throw booze or missiles)...the whole idea of a mammoth five-day contest, to sort out the wheat from the chaff.
What's good about cricket now and ever: batsmen who score prolific, beautifully crafted runs; bowlers who knock out the stumps or bamboozle with guile; keepers who chirp incessantly and make the game entertaining; fielders who put their bodies on the line and throw brilliantly; Captains whose thinking can turn a game; and even the umpires, whose little quirks we get to know and love/hate...and the opposite of all that, where we get to whinge and rant, and enjoy that too.
What a great thread - thanks!!
