Born and Bred. Does it matter? Empty Born and Bred. Does it matter?

Post by Guest Tue 28 Apr 2009, 23:43

I nearly wrote bread . . .

Carrying on from a comment on the county thread about there being three South Africans in the Somerset team . . .

Does it matter to you that not many of your team were actually born in your county/region/state/whatever? The current Somerset team only has two proper (to be said in a west country accent) members and it does irk me a little. Seriously, should there be a quota?

It falls into 2 categories

1. Those that come here after the age of 20 to qualify

I don't care if they've done the time in this country and have an affinity for it.

Lamb & Smith settled here. As did Hick.

I don't however like the Pattinsons & McCagues.

2. Those who were children when they came here such as Strauss (6) & Prior (13) - they're English to me. As in fact they are.

Only arsemunching Australians would claim they're Saffers in a points scoring arsemuncher contest.

Yes, I agree about players like Strauss and Prior fitting in fine, but would you still like to see at least a certain amount of pure-breds in your team? I would but I feel it's wrong to want that.

Whats 'pure-bred' though? I think you get very close to going down the line of Nazi science when people talk about that.

I mean, KP has more English blood in him than Andrew Symonds has Aussie blood in him. See? It's not that easy is it.

Ideally for me, born in the county and at least schooled there. Maybe they went away for a bit, but came back and stayed loyal.

So, we could have 6 local lads and a mixture of others, those with SA/Aus/Ind families but brought up in England and accepted. Looking at today's Somerset team, I felt a bit sad. Too many incommers. I don't remember county teams being quite so cosmopolitan in the old days. But I'm not just talking about foreigners from other countries.

If they come over here in their teens or early 20s with a desire to play for England - fine!

It can't be a coincidence that the first class comp that has provided the strongest team over most of the period where cricket has been basically fully professional has been one with the fewest teams and the fewest imports.

Didn't you only recently move to the west country yourself, to get away from the chavs?

Infact you're very right, Zatty. Of the main 12 of our usual 1st XI squad, four were born outside of Britain (SA and Pak) and of the other eight, seven are Yorkie born and bred and one (Vaughan...) is Lancie born but Yorkie bred. We perfectly fit, Dem's description.
