Day/night test matches on ICC agenda.
Chennai, India, - Cricket's governing body will hold a two-day meeting in London to discuss the possibility of playing day-night test matches and to find ways of keeping the one-day format relevant amid Twenty20's growing popularity.
The International Cricket Council's (ICC) cricket committee will also look at the umpires referral system, which allows players to call for television reviews, at the meeting at Lord's from Monday.
The referral system was first introduced nine months ago and trialled in four test series.
"The committee will consider whether or not to recommend a continuation of the system," an ICC statement said on Saturday.
While day-night matches were introduced in one-day international cricket three decades ago, test matches have always been played in daylight.

Pie in the sky.
They haven't got a ball that they can use under lights in Tests.
The end.

FFS, it's another cut and paste job that actually adds nothing to the story.

Well, it's one way of ensuring a decent crowd for a Bangladesh Test.
History/novelty value.
Mind you, if they yse the pink ball and it swings like it did in the charity match at the SCG this year, it'll be all over in two, maybe three, days. But possibly only a session shorter than otherwise...

I think the only way Test cricket can survive is by having a test championship between 8 major team with bonus points system. It should follow the grouping system we will have for champions trophy to keep it as short as possible and as interesting as possible. There should be not more bilateral series between any teams. There should be a test match season and no cricket other than test cricket during that time. Every team will get from 3 to 5 matches. I aggree that day/night cricket will not work. I think i will follow England Vs West Indies more closely if it is going to affect Pakistan chances to reach Semi final.

Are they working on the assumption that a Test has to be played in whites so the white ball is out? Or might they actually consider playing it in one-day outfits?

And another thing, if they play the test at the end of May - it will be light until well past 9pm anyway. Hardly time for any meaningful cricket to be played under cover of total darkness.

Given 21st century technology, I do wonder why it is proving so difficult to make a cricket ball of any chosen colour behave the same as a traditional red one!

Well, the problem with any 'light' colour is that they have to bleach the leather first, then apply a coloured lacquer, unlike a red ball which is a result of more natural colouring.
Synthetic leathers look like leather, but don't have the durability.

Don't tell me we're going to try this in a test without trying it in a day/night FC game.

The ICC wouldn't be that silly. They think everything through before unleashing it on the world... Like the 'Super Series' a few years ago. Or the idea of substitutes in cricket, with squads having to be declared before the toss...

According to one of the Sunday papers, it does not look like there will be a floodlit test next year after all. The ICC wanted the pink ball to be trialled in a first class match before sanctioning its use in a test.
The ECB asked Worcs. and Durham if they would be prepared to be guinea pigs in their match recently finished - the answer was a resounding "thanks, but no thanks"

Makes sense from the ICC really. Should never be trialling stuff in a test match.
Looks like my journey to Lords next year with consist of the usual 3 day test match!

Here is a fascinating article about the pros & cons of different coloured cricket balls.
