What is Symonds implying?
"You have to be pretty thick-skinned to survive in the Australian
dressing room, let alone out on the paddock," Symonds wrote in his
column in News Ltd newspapers.
Is he trying to say that he gets a hard time in the Aus dressing room?

He means you have to be tough just to get a game with the Aussies, if something like monkey calls could upset you then you would not even make the Aussie team. You have to be mentally tough to play in the Australian team, if you are mentally weak it will be found out before you get a game.

All this PC race baloney does my head in.
Take poor Herschelle Gibbs for example, to get 'done' for calling unruly fans 'animals' is disgraceful. Had said fans been white no action would have been taken, FACT!
Not being able to call a Pakistani a 'Paki' for fear of being labelled a racist when Pakistani cricket fans in Australia can be seen holding up banners saying 'Go Paki go' and can be heard singing, ''let's go Paki, let's go' just shows what a crazy, ****** up world we're living in.

Re: What is Symonds implying?
Except that what you call 'FACT' isn't actually a 'fact'.
And that second thing is because the word 'Paki' isn't actually supposed to be a racist slur and is just an abbreviation of Pakistani. Everybody outside of Britain knows that (I suppose it isn't a considered slur in Aus and other western countries? It certainly isn't in the US. And you shouldn't be surprised when you see the word used in mainstream Indian media.), and is hence free to use the word as they please. It was made into a slur by some stoopid racist British pseudo-pr!cks, quite unfortunately. Quite different from the scenario where blacks are free to call themselves by the N-word and nobody raises an eyebrow while anybody else using that word is crucified.

Lighten up or bugger off. No-one comes here to get abused (except Mudge - he loves it).

Re: What is Symonds implying?
Yeah, I think the generation or two before me put pay to any use of the word 'Paki' over here. It has too much history. Pakster is a good replacement.
As for the 'animals' jibe, I totally agree. They were being quite animalistic in their abuse at the time.

Re: What is Symonds implying?
When I first joined the C4 forum back in 1999 I had no idea that the word 'Paki' was considered a racial slur in Britain.
In Australia it was (and still is) a simple abbreviation, just like W'Indies or Saffies.
As most of the people on the forum were British I made a clear effort to avoid using the word. That habit has spilled over into everyday life. Whenever I hear an Aussie use the word now I can't help but cringe - even though it is entirely innocent.
I think it shows how our cultural backgrounds play a big part in how we interpret things. It's a shame that a good, fun word like 'Paki' is now tainted in my mind forever.
Cheers.
