Re: The Ashes '16'
Well, to be fair their obsession with the 12 MBE's has faded somewhat in the last few months.DJ_Smerk wrote:I wish they'd just forget about 2005...
Strauss - definite
Trescothick - retired from Tests
Vaughan - left out
Pietersen - definite
Bell - in squad
Flintoff - definite if fit
G.Jones - discarded
Giles - retired
Hoggard - discarded
Harmison - left out
S.Jones - injured
Collingwood - definite
So only four of them (including "17 runs" Colly) likely to feature in Cardiff, with Bell likely to play a part at some stage (probably a classy 60 not out in a lost cause after a first innings duck...)

You should put Colly in italics as he barely played in the 2005 series. This time round is where he might actually earn that MBE.

Yeah, Gary Pratt probably deserved one as much as he did... where's he these days?DJ_Smerk wrote:You should put Colly in italics as he barely played in the 2005 series. This time round is where he might actually earn that MBE.

I think if you get up Ponting's nose, then thats an automatic MBE.
Saying that, Harby and half the Indian Test team would have had one too...

Story
Bopara backs Vaughan and Harmison.
I found this quote quite interesting.
Is it possible that Bopara will perform better at 3 if he knows that his place is not nailed down? Could he be hoping for Vaughan to find some form this season, increasing his incentive to play big knocks this summer to keep his place? He doesn't strike me as the sort of namby pamby guy who would back any old player. Slightly peculiar choice of words from Ravz.

"Michael's a good friend of mine and it's not good to see your friends not in the squad but he's a fine player and I'm sure if he was given the opportunity tomorrow he would go out and do well," Bopara told PA.

Just diplomacy.
Can't think of when they would have played together. SL perhaps?

I'm sure all new players in the squad have to swear an oath of allegiance to Vaughan and the Ashes Twelve before they're allowed to so much as carry drinks...JKLever wrote:Just diplomacy.

Of the guys who will probably bowl for England in t'Ashes, there's only one who can't have the 'WI/NZ are my bitches' thingummy in the middle of their name. Anderson averages 40 against non-minnows the last two years, Swann 40 (2 matches), Sidebottom 42, Broad 56.
The two guys with records better than Flintoff have both died a death; Tremlett and Hoggard.

Fair point Gus. Therefore Onions really doesn't need the minnow basher test put before him...

Not that far under the thumb yet, JKL, just the first symptoms of being qunt-struck . . .

Forking hell, Vikram Slogdonki?
And Stephen Moore.
A South African with a 2009 Championship average of 12.50?
The Sidebottom scenario is a bizarre one indeed. It's almost as though they forgot to include him in either side having included him in the 16 man 'squad' . . .
. . . they wouldn't be that stupid would they? Ah. That'll be it then.
