Re: The Open
How some people can seriously say that Tiger Woods is a more impressive "sportsman" than Roger Federer when 59 year olds can stand a good chance of winning golf tournaments is incredible.

Re: The Open
I think it says a lot for the sport that a bloke who hasn't been a power in the game for more years than I can remember can suddenly become competitive. It goes to show that it's not all about brute strength off the tee.

Re: The Open
Hmm, well I'd still say that a "sport" where a 59 year old can be in contention to win a major tournament, in this day and age shouldn't really be classed as a sport.
I'm a big snooker fan, so I'm not saying that these "sports" can't be thrilling, gripping and thoroughly entertaining, but I just think that calling them sports is pushing it.

Re: The Open
So, competitive sport is the preserve of (say) the under 35s? That's a tough call.

He was still up with the leaders after the third round, but faded on the Sunday.

Re: The Open
Tiger was sh!t last night. When in doubt, try and smash your way out, and end up in knee deep heather.
Well played Tom Watson. But my money's on Retief "Fark I wish I didn't look like Ricky Ponting" Goosen.

Re: The Open
Golf's too hard to watch, it goes for too long. They need to get rid of all the fairways, exept for par 3s, and make the hole bigger, say the size of a swimming pool. Then there should lots of holes in one, to increase the excitement, and the tournament could finish in about 3.5 hours.
Oh and bring in some danicing girls and loud music too.

I reckon I'm on a winner. I might put a case to a couple of rich Indian businessmen, then see if I can crack the US market with it.

'Cept Indian's, like most sports, are sh!t at golf. Therefore the mindless millions of subis won't be interested.

They're only not interested in golf because it goes too long. MY VERSION WILL DRAW IN THE MASSES.

Re: The Open
Tom Watson's story proves what a great sport golf is.
It's worth remembering that sport and athletics are two different things.
I'd hazard a guess that if Steve Waugh was invited to play in the Lord's Test every year until he was 60 he'd eventually knock out another century.
Cricket is a team game, so unlike Watson he won't get that chance.
But I love sports where skill and mental ability play a more important role than sheer physical prowess.

Still taips, a pretty p!sspoor effort by the great man. Such petulance every time (every hole) he played a poor shot into the heather.

Re: The Open
I got the shits with Tiger's petulance about ten years ago. If he's not happy with the way he hits a golf ball, take up poker. I'd kill to be able to hit shots he gets annoyed at.

Re: The Open
Aye qmy. The man had THE perfect golf swing about 7 years ago (the stillest head you would ever see) and then left David Leadbetter. Now his head drops near 12 inches in the down swing and he carves the ball all over the place when not on song.
Talk about messing with perfection.

I like the Lee Travino school of thought. If I find someone who can beat me I'll hire him. Gonna be at Turnberry in a couple of hours.

If I was a betting man, I would be tempted to have a modest wager on Westwood - he played very steadily yesterday.
