Chaminda Vaas to retire from tests

One of Sri Lanka's finest servants. With the series against Pakistan already won, he'll get a farewell test starting tomorrow at Colombo.

Along expected lines, I guess. He’d lost much of his verve in the last couple of years though he could still swing prodigiously in helpful conditions. Sorry to see him go, but all good things must end.

shame really as I reckon he's been made to "retire" rather than on his terms. It is no way to treat one of your finest, loyal and outstanding players! Farewell vaasy and best wishes in your ODI career.

A few spinners might argue with that one as well...
Best bowler with more than 50 letters in his name for sure though.

Joe Vaas - fine bowler, good egg.
Irani is ahead in one respect, he has the funneir accent.

Yes. The best bowler whose real name I don't know.

How can you say that? You clearly know nothing.

Re: Chaminda Vaas to retire from tests
the way this test is going he might retire with a test loss
easily lanka's second greatest bowler, probably best all-rounder (jaya may have something to say, but in tests you would have to hand it to vaas) and probably the second-best left-armer of the last 20 years (or more)
much like the other recent retiree (flintoff) he would be considered a very good cricketer, but not quite a great one. i wonder who would be considered a better all-rounder

Well Flintoff is without doubt a better bat - 5x100 25x50 compared to Vaas 1x100 13x50 and a higher average.
On stats alone you would say Vaas the better bowler, better average by 2 runs per wicket and 12 5w hauls compared to 3w for Fred. They have done completely different jobs as a bowler over the years though.
It's very hard to statistically look at Flintoffs figures as a whole, it's like he's been 2 cricketers.
When I first joined the C4 forum he was pretty much a figure of ridicule - batting average of 18, bowling average of 50 after about 20 tests!
Since 2003, he's scored 3000+ runs at 37 and taken nearly 200 wickets at 29 and thats despite the injuries affecting his performances the last few years.
As you say, both very good cricketers in different ways

Flintoff- far better batsman, significantly better bowler, better fielder
Flintoff by a fair distance
