You didn't need to be an expert to realise about Flo-Jo though - she had veins popping out everywhere FFS!

Which she tried to disguise with all that make up to try to appear vaguely feminine.
And then she retired as soon as out of competition testing was brought in.

Re: Usain Bolt
Incidentally, I've just been reminded by the fact that it's currently on the telly that no-one, absolutely no-one has got anywhere near Jonathan Edwards' World Triple jump record. He's got the three longest jumps in history, and something mad like 7 of the top 11. He even had one ruled out as a record by wind assistance that is half a metre further than anyone else has managed. Utterly extraordinary, and no-one ever suggests he was a cheat.
It can happen.

And the closest was Marion Jones who was later uncovered as a cheat. Taking those two out of the equation, last night's winner Shelly-Ann Fraser would have equalled the world record.Shoeshine wrote:The Flo-Jo one is a definite case in point - that no-one has got remotely near her world record for more than 20 years is peculiar to say the least.

He's seen the light.
Another victory for rational thought over imaginary friends.

Indeed, I always had a possibly slightly irrational hatred of the guy due to him constantly thanking god and going on about god at every opportunity. Of all the people to suddenly "go atheist" he would be the last person I would think of.Shoeshine wrote:vilkrang wrote:Find it really weird that he's an atheist now.Shoeshine wrote:Incidentally, I've just been reminded by the fact that it's currently on the telly that no-one, absolutely no-one has got anywhere near Jonathan Edwards' World Triple jump record. He does still claim that his belief in god elevated his performances, which is an interesting argument.

He does, in that he feels it was the same as sports psychology via a different means. I'm sure he's right in that too. However it is framed, that kind of certainty is bound to be an advantage.

I can't imagine that becoming a sex crazed believer in anything would help her chances anyway.
Except possibly with RD.
Provided she still had a pulse.

JGK wrote:Given that he is the 200m WR holder too it's not surprising that he is stronger near the end of the 100m than others and therefore appears to be accelerating at 70m.
Can't wait to see what he can do in the 200m. It's not beyond the realms that he could eventually do a 19 flat.
Further to this, the IAAF have a points scale that rates each athletic performance with a view to comparing them to each other. Bolt's 9.58 equates to 1374 points (out of a possible 1400). To get 1374 points in the 200m he'd need to run 19.08.

So how does this points scale work? And what would he have had to do to get 1400 points in the 100?

Don't know - have been looking for more details on the IAAF site.
I think it is similar to the ICC rankings though. Logarithmic such that 1400 is actually impossible.

IS SHE a he? That is the question being asked at the world championships about South Africa's Caster Semenya.
The 18-year-old 800m gold medal favourite has burst on to the world scene in recent months, with her appearance, including obvious facial hair, and muscular build igniting speculation about her gender.
The IAAF is aware of the issue and has conducted physical tests and genetic screening to try to determine the legitimacy of Semenya's sex.
Not for children
An overnight meeting of officials in Berlin was expected to determine whether she takes her place in tomorrow morning's 800m final.
Semenya announced her arrival at last month's African junior titles, running 1min 56.72sec, which was more than seven seconds faster than her best the previous year.
Semenya, who hails from a remote part of the Limpopo province, clocked 1:58.66 to win her semi-finals yesterday, relegating Kenyan world champion Janeth Jepkosgei to third.

OK - seems I got that wrong. 1400 is 9.52s for the 100m. Doesn't seem impossible for Bolt after Berlin.

Re: Usain Bolt
It would seem these scores are revised every year to try to keep ahead of new world records in terms of 1400 being virtually unattainable. The 2008 edition of the IAAF Scoring Tables of Indoor Athletics contains 91 athletic events (46 for
men and 45 for women).
When studying the 2005, 2006 and 2007 results, we have realised that certain results and points
became disproportionate. The corrections have been made with creating new formulas in the following
events:
• Men’s 600m, 1000m, 2 Miles, 5000m, 10,000m, 20km, Half Marathon, 25km, 30km,
Marathon, 100km, 3km Walk, 5km Walk, 10km Walk, 30km Walk, 35km Walk, 50km
Walk
• Women’s 600m, 3000mSC, 2 Miles, 5000m, 10,000m, Marathon, 100km, 3km Walk,
5km Walk, 10km Walk, 20km Walk, 30km Walk, 50km Walk, Long Jump, Shot Put,
Discus Throw, Hammer Throw, Javelin Throw
