This is one of those myths that everyone believes to be true even though it isn't.

"Ich bin ein Berliner" is the correct way for a non-Berliner to express metaphorical citizenship of the city.

Down in Bavaria, it is also common for locals to refer to themselves in this way ie. "Ich bin ein Münchener".
