Coaches - who needs 'em?
Picking up on soemthing on thre BCCI thread, India have now one two trophies without a coach. England's tactics at the RWC were as much a product of player input as anything else.
Is the importance of a coach overstated?

Re: Coaches - who needs 'em?
A coach is undoubtedly an influential part of a team's set-up.
The England's tactics at the RWC may have begun with the player's intervention, but rest assured, Ashton plotted both wins against Australia and France ... in conjunction with the player's input.
They're essential in football.
In cricket, Feltch's astute observations and applications played a significant part in England winning the 2005 Ashes; whilst paradoxically, his influence and team selection reversed the process as we handed them them back in 2006/7!

Think it depends what sort of experience and personnel you have in your team. Think a young team needs guidance and if you have some talented-but-divisive characters in the side, they need a tight reign coming from authoritah.

The Kiddie has only just graduated to being The Acne Ridden Adolescent.
I'm not rapt to the eyeballs in the idea of 'grooming' anybody and giving them Golden Child status (with all that means for internal team harmony), but least of all somebody like Clarke whose spot in the best XI is still not quite set in cement.
When Ponts packs it in we can then pick his replacement . If Clarke is a regular fixture in the side then, he'll be a candidate.

Especially when there are two obvious stand-ins at present, should Ponting be indisposed for any games ...

i think in cricket at least a good captain is much more important than a good coach. would be the reverse in football

Quite simply, yesit is overstated. Been saying it for years. Bowling coaches/batting coaches/fitness coaches etc....
If players are going to be world class they will do it themselves.

From a certain point onwards, perhaps. First, though, they have to take up the sport as kids...gh05 wrote:Quite simply, yesit is overstated. Been saying it for years. Bowling coaches/batting coaches/fitness coaches etc....
