The Australian portion of Antarctica is actually bigger than Australia. Lots of space, lots of water and lots of resources. Must be ripe for development.

We only had an empire in the first place so we could teach some other nations how to play cricket to give us some competition. Once we'd done that we didn't really need it anymore, so we gave it back.
Of course that might be a slight over-simplification.
