Re: Films you've watched recently.
Young Merryl Streep looks a lot like that chick from Ronin, Natascha Mcelhone.

They're going to remake Deer Hunter with Shia Lebeouf apparently.

American Beauty is a very good film as well. Kevin Spacey is so wonderfully deadpan.

Here's a good chocie for a day's movie watching, assuming the beers (and possibly weed) flows throughout.
Bloodsport (Solid, Van Damme shit man)
Back to the future
The Wedding Crashers
Vacuuming completely nude in paradise (Google it, then rent it....it's a great, gritty British comedy starring Timothy Spall and directed by Danny Boyle)
Blade
Quality.

Re: Films you've watched recently.
The first time I saw the Deer Hunter I thought it was one of the best films I'd seen, but after a few repeat viewings I find the first hour to be totally boring. It's all about the russian roulette scenes really, and they aren't even historically accurate as there are no reports of POWs ever being forced to play it.DJ_Smerk wrote:I watched The Deer Hunter a few months back, one of the best Vietnam film's I've seen which isn't specifically about Vietnam itself.
I still think it's a great film though, even if my opinion is based almost purely on how intense those russian roulette scenes are. Deniro should have won an oscar that year for his performance.

Re: Films you've watched recently.
I once saw "Brazil" with Terry Gilliam there, when I was a student in the 80s. At the end you were allowed to ask him questions. Unfortunately, the session was hogged by loud right-on mouthy b'stards who kept trying to make out the film had racist undertones (it doesn't) and giving him a hard time, despite the fact that it was very good of him to turn out to talk to us at all. The quieter majority of us, who mostly loved it, never got to tell him and the whole evening still makes me cringe. The poor bloke must have been left thinking all the students there were wanqers (which was not necessarily true). Do universities still have similar tw*ts giving the others a bad name I wonder?

I went to see Inglourious Basterds twice at the cinema - I thought it was farking immense. I could sort of see how it was flawed, but I cared not one jot.
Also finally got around to watching the Shawshank Redemption, which was absolutely marvellous. That's the length of five football fields.

Yes, Smerk and Pete - me and my bro were on about the calibre of the Coen Brothers the other day. We may well do a CB marathon.
Re: Films you've watched recently.

Re: Films you've watched recently.
I still consider The Deer Hunter a great film. At times it's been my absolute favourite.
I find the "slow" opening hour captivating. Perhaps it's because it made me think of my own mates. We all used to do silly things like leaving someone behind on the road, reversing back slowly then driving away again... multiple times.
That first hour allows you to really spend time with the characters. They aren't just cardboard cut-outs. They come off as real and it makes the tragic second half of the movie all that more powerful.
I also don't have a problem with the Russian roulette stuff. I always considered it to be a metaphor and believe it works very well on that level.
I'll always remember the feeling I had when I watched the film for the first time. I was emotionally shattered and literally unable to speak for a good 30 minutes. It's powerful stuff.

As for films I've watched recently.
I saw Ian McKellen's 1995 version of Richard III for the first time last night.
It's one of the better adaptions of Shakespeare for the screen. It doesn't simply film the play - it turns it into a true movie.
It also updates the time-setting to 1930s England, imagining the place as something of a fascist state.
Wasn't bad considering the dialogue was written 400 years ago.

Saw "G-Force" in 3D recently. Easily the best film about talking special-agent-guinea-pigs I've ever seen.
