All this awful talk about Wright having something about him is just garbage. He is a cross bat hacker, and as for his bowling, well, at Test level I would suggest it was friendly at best!

Bravo isn't as quick as Wright. He's been banging down 90mph stuff this year. I don't disagree that Bravo is ahead of him, I was just using the example of him as someone who appeared at the start to be neither good enough at batting nor bowling to have a big career ahead of him - and he's developed. The reality is that the England hierarchy don't seem to disagree with any of these points, but that they think there is something there that can be worked on. They may be right, they may be wrong; but the point is that not that many cricketers come on to the scene fully fledged and ready to take on the world. Wright's game has undoubtedly improved markedly in the last few years, who is to say that it won't continue?

Luke Wright is a 85mph at best, 90mph is just fantasy in all reality.
You would expect his game to improve however, I cannot see how a bloke who is essentially just a hacker of a cricket ball is ever going to be a Test all-rounder. He'll never be good enough in either discipline, let alone them combined. We're picking a bloke in the Test squad who has a highest score in ODI's of 52 in 25 attempts, to potentially bat in our top 7 in Test matches against SA, and whose bowling figures in that form are awful.
And his FC stats aren't all that awe inspiring either really.
You are very correct with them being ready to take on the world, but this selection reeks of desperation to replace Fred!

Yeah, Duke Wright is a bag of wank. No doubts about it. However, he has got some pizzazz and when he's not trying to hack it out of the ground he's actually got good wrists and some correct cricket shots. He won't be in the starting line-up... I expect them to pick Deirdre at 7. It isn't the worst squad selection I've heard of.
There's an air of resignation about IRB... we all knew he was going to be there.

Pizzazz?!?!
The only pizzazz he shows is the special face he puts on with his lolling tongue when he runs up to bowl another floaty half tracker! He does have good hands, but that won't ever work in the test arena, and his technique is set up for a front foot out the way approach!
Its a shocking one in my view, as he has done nothing to warrant it - bar be a trier!
Well of course the NPB was going to be there!
I don't mind the other selections too much, although would have liked as most on here to have seen another specialist batter in there instead of one of the gashlord wanna be all-rounders we have selected!

Disagree. I have seen him play some FC stuff and he's less frenetic. He is less square on and gets his head over the ball moreso.
He can get it down at a reasonable lick and can hit a big ball - that's 'pizzazz' IMO.
We all wanted Carbs or Ramps in. Or Key. Or Denly. Anyone but needle-dick.

He bowled at 90mph plus according to speed guns several times this season. If you dismiss the speed gun, fine, but them's the facts.

So your trying to tell me that Luke Wright is as quick as Freddie?

Dan, I'll take your word for it, but still don't believe he'll ever be more than he is at the moment with regards to the International Stage!

No. I'm telling you that he bowled at 90mph plus at times this season. You can view that however you wish.

I shall view it in the way that he is friendly to face, even if the speed gun says 90mph plus, and that a proper quick bowler in Fred who also at 90mph on the speed gun is not!
Big difference to me that is!

Sure, it's a fair point that speed guns don't tell for a moment the hostility of the bowler. On the other hand, Flintoff's wicket-taking abilities were below those of many other bowlers, no matter how much batsmen may profess to disliking him. Short of facing them both, I don't see how we can judge that.

At the risk of the copping abuse about my next comment.
I know people that have done.... And there is just no contest. Luke wright is friendly by all accounts.

Dozy decision by the selectors to pick Wright ahead of another specialist batsman - particularly as another specialist opener is required just in case Gooch foesn't sort out Cook's technique.

Carbs should be touring. Opens, an option at three, cracking fielder.
Selectors dropped a bollock with that one.

Re: England squad to South Africa to be announced today
Wouldn't argue with that - but come the tour to Bangaldesh, I bet it'll be Joe Duckly striding out to bat with Cook if Strauss takes a break.
