Feltch: Fred let me down
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/cricket/england/7065058.stm
So, in making Fred skipper:
1. his attempt to stop Fred drinking failed
2. his attempt to stop Fred from drinking with Harmi was rendered irrelevent because Harmi stayed sober but still bowled poo
3. He demotivated Strauss
All that on top of the GoJo and Piles fiascos.
Great.

Re: Feltch: Fred let me down
Perhaps he thought he might be as successful as Ponting - forgetting Captain Drunky had the Aussie side, and not the Poms, under him?

I thought Fletcher wanted Strauss as captain but the selectors overruled him?
If Strauss lost all form and motivation because Fred beat him to the captaincy, then it's a bit soft on Strauss' part, imo.

Always nice to stick the knife in and blame your players. Quality stuff from Felch.

I wonder if Fletcher might end up at Lancashire - I read somewhere that Watkinson was in the running to replace Peter Moores at the academy.

Im pretty sure he could have got the Windies job if he wanted it. South Africa would probably take him as well. I guess he doesnt want to travel so much.

You can understand that - he's not far off 60.

You're being a bit harsh on the man who turned England round from being the world laughing stock.
Flintoff DID let him down. I don't see how anyone could argue anything different.

Maybe it was Felch who let Freddie down. Picking him because he was the popular choice and because he might be able to control Harmi, instead of considering the type of person Flintoff is (obviously drinking has been a big part of his life) and how the pressure might impact him.

Getting Fred to keep Harmi off the juice sounds rather like getting Fido to guard the leg of lamb you're having for lunch.

Flintoff's not a four year old. If he couldn't control himself, that's down to him and no-one else. I don't see for a moment how you can blame Fletcher for it. That's just a version of the "he had a difficult childhood" argument.

Mate, if you have had any position of authority you will know that if you choose someone for a job and they fail, it is you that has failed. It is your job to pick the right people.

Re: Feltch: Fred let me down
Of course it is. But he's only got a limited number to pick from. And ultimately, if he chooses Flintoff to do the job, then it's perfectly reasonable for him to expect Fred to conduct himself accordingly. If Flintoff then doesn't do so, that isn't Fletcher's fault, it's Flintoff's. It seems to me that what some here are saying is that it's Fletcher's fault that Flintoff went out and got hammered and misbehaved. It isn't.

Impact upon him.
That's not right either. How can pressure impact upon something? Pressure can crush but it cannot cause an impact.

Re: Feltch: Fred let me down
That's not what I'm saying at least. Flintoff was rightly dumped from vice-captain, it even sounds like he was lucky to keep the captaincy in Oz. I just don't like Felch coming in at this late date putting the blame on him in the press.Shoeshine wrote:Of course it is. But he's only got a limited number to pick from. Sorry, Rob I, if I knew English wasn't your first language I would have used simpler language. In place of "impact" just think "have a profound effect on".
If you have any other comprehension problems, just ask.

He has a book to sell - and ultimately he does have to make a living.
To be honest, enough people who should have known better have dumped on Fletcher over the last year, so it would be a bit rich for them to complain about it.
The comments about Flintoff are pretty anodyne it seems to me. They aren't much more than a statement of the bleedin' obvious. I wouldn't expect any truly startling revelations from him, it's just not his style.

I think there's a few players who might say Fletcher let them down.

Feltch stayed on a year too long as coach. He should have quit after the Ashes 2005.

Re: Feltch: Fred let me down
Old news.
It's already been established that Fletcher wanted Strauss to captain but Dave Grave - the voice of the people - followed his heart (and by heart I mean the Sun newspaper) and over-ruled him in favour of "Freddie The Hero What Won Us The Ashes On His Own".
And it wasn't much of a stretch to assume Fletcher - who holds a grudge against anyone and anything that might have ever wronged him in the slightest (see Graeme Swann) - was a little bit pissed off at Flintoff for being something of a boozy wide-boy.
