Botham slams Twenty20 cricket
English legend Ian Botham lashed out at the cricket administrators for shoving more and more Twenty20 down the fans' throat and said the slam-bang format, which is 'bastardising the game', has no place in international cricket.
Botham lambasted the "greed" of the administrators and questioned the logic behind having back-to-back Twenty20 World Cup.
"They are playing too much Twenty20 right now. We have just had a Twenty20 World Cup and within a year we're going to have another in the Caribbean. It is greed, greed, greed. That is what will kill the game, the greed of the authorities," Botham said in an interview to be published in the December issue of The Wisden Cricketer magazine.
"Twenty20 has its place but not on the international stage. It is a domestic and franchise sport. I don't want to see the best players in the world standing there and slogging. Twenty 20 is bastardising the game," said Botham.

Re: Botham slams Twenty20 cricket
Fully agree with him.
T20 has no place in int'l cricket. To see all boards trying to stage 2 T20 games during the tour is just way too much. 1 was already more than enough (I'd scrap that too) but scheduling 2 T20s is just mind boggling, absolutely unnecessary.
If at all ICC wants to play T20s at int'l level, then schedule T20 WC every 4 years just like ODI WC. And thats about it.

*cough* *choke* *splutter*
FFS, if the farkin IPL wasn't around and was never conceived then 2 x T20's per tour might be palatable. But a non-stop 4 weeks+ domestic-cum-international circus is just a boil on the @rse of the great game.
Farkin ban Modi and BanIndia. They have killed any novelty this format ever had.

You should blame Kapil Dev and the ICL for the existence of the IPL.

I just blameindia generally. Let's face it they had to find a form of the game they had a chance at, and it seems they even farked that up.

No, the importation of all the bloody foreigners screwed their game up. They should have taken heed of the example set by CC

Well they had to do something. You couldn't run an Indian tournament without foreign players. It would be like the EPL minus foreigners.

That proves my point.
England football is stuffed.
Indian "cricket" is stuffed.

Re: Botham slams Twenty20 cricket
Comments on this thread aren't unexpected which shows the petulance of the old suspects.
2 T20s on a tour were played before the advent of IPL as well. Only an ill informed one would link it to IPL. And even that would be an understatement.
PS: Its not that I'm defending IPL. I just don't like IPL or anything that promotes T20s. I just hate T20s as a form of a great game called cricket.

BTW, what prompted ICC to hold 2 T20 WCs in successive years? Talk about milking the cash cow to the hilt and may be killing it eventually. How I wish the latter to be proved true!!!

Re: Botham slams Twenty20 cricket
I wonder if we'll be reading a Wikipedia entry in 20 years saying something like:
"Cricket is a bat-and-ball team sport that is first documented as being played in southern England in the 16th century. By the end of the 18th century, cricket had developed to the point where it had become the national sport of England. The expansion of the British Empire led to cricket being played overseas and by the mid-19th century the first international matches were being held. in the early 2000s, the game's governing body, the International Cricket Council (ICC), has 104 member countries. With its greatest popularity in the Test playing countries, cricket was widely regarded as the world's second most popular sport. Then a blight on the game called the IPL, a mindless sh!tfest based on the b@stardised version of the 50 over version of the sport lasting up to 6 weeks and 150+ games was introduced by a numbnutted farkwit named Modi with the support of the fascist Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The great spectacle of cricket was ruined by this ridiculous sideshow and the once mighty game quickly outlived its appeal to its once multitude of fans. The last game of international cricket of any form was played at Lords on Sept 30, 2030. Lords was always known as the Home of Cricket, but was renamed the Grave of Cricket on Oct 1, 2030. RIP."

If you say so.
Personally I hold the view that if English players play with the best, week in and week out, it should benefit the national team.
