Have I ever said how much I respect and admire Jason Gillespie.

Having been through a rapid fall from grace himself, Jason Gillespie believes former pace mate Brett Lee may quit Test cricket to become a one-day and Twenty20 specialist.

Whilst the overall message in this article is positive (Brett Lee retiring from real cricket), the implications of the broader underlying problems in Cricket are loud and clear. The fact that most players will end up going in the same direction as Lee, (play 20-50 tests then move to the shorter stuff), is worrying.

Players that have excelled more in the shorter formats more than tests will always sacrifice the former for the latter.

Jayasuriya for example.

Especially as they get older. The 5 day game is going to be very hard on their bodies - especially a pace bowler who is now suffering badly with injuries. He could probably cope with 10 overs a day - but 20-25 for up to 3 days in a row?

So Tests will be the domain for young exciting cricketers trying to make a mark, and the odd veteran who plays cos he loves the game.

Sounds good to me.
