I think it was the 1981 test against the Windies - it probably didn't hurt that it was one of the greatest days of test cricket ever with Aust all out for 198 after Kim Hughes scored 100* including 23 runs after the fall of the 9th wicket; and the Windies were 4/10 at stumps with Lillee bowling Viv on the last ball of the day to tie Lance Gibb's WR wickets total.

I think Tailender said she was there. I certainly remember watching it was a nearly 10 year old and being mesmerised.

Who could ever forget that day? Probably Kim Hughes' greatest innings. And that electrifying spell from the great DKL just topped it off.

And from MB's linky, it appears the first Boxing Day Test at the MCG was in 1968 v Windies. And unless there was rain, Boxing Day was a bit ordinary. Windies 6-176 at Stumps. But Bill would've pleased the bitter Vomits with his 205 in Aus's only innings.

Linky he-are

"Who could ever forget that day. Probably Kim Hughes "

Heard Kim speak at a lunch about that day ...he made a number of errors that the cricket nerds in the room picked up ...hopefully he was embellishing

And I reckon big Lou Rowan probably saved Clag early on in his innings that day with an absolutely plumb lbw not given off Big Bird.
