I suspect TGM has been signed up by the Fairfax press for regular articles in the lead-up to the Ashes. Instead of doing a 'Red v Spanky' thing and starting in excess of 20 threads on them, I'll bring them to attention here. And I won't be going the 'cut and paste the whole article' route so beloved of the forum bint, click on the link if you want to read the whole thing.

And here's the link

If you can't be bothered to click, TGM rates Swann as the best spinner in the world atm, says he still thinks Collingwood didn't deserve his gong from Her Maj after Ashes 05, and says this about KP:
The Great Man wrote:In Kevin Pietersen, England also have, not the best, but the most destructive batsman. The Indian Premier League and World T20 came at a good time for him.

He was struggling in the Test arena. When he gets into trouble he gets technical and reads too much into things. He is best when he plays on instinct and in T20 there is not much time to think. You just have to go out there and hit the ball.

It is great for England because all the other players seem to walk a bit taller when KP is playing well. Also, the opposition concentrate on getting KP out so much that it allows others to play with freedom.

I thought he was one of the sharpest readers of the game. Until this morning when I saw the Herald Sun.

TGM wrote:There has been a lot of talk about Clarke and his position in the T20 team. I believe he is still the perfect No. 3 and captain of the T20 side. Improvement in the T20 team starts from the captain and from strategy, tactics and style of play.

Australia's improvement in that sphere has been outstanding and the performance at the world T20 is something the whole team should be proud of, especially the captain.

Of course, it could just be his way of taking a dig at Ponting.

And how he can be writing for the SMH and The Herald Sun at the same time intrigues me.

Why would he dig at Ponting Zat? Did the two have issues of some sort?

Does seem Strange however that he's praising MC in such a way though. Clarke as much as said he barely justified his place in the XI and had a poor run with the bat.

Get real! He's great value and an astute reader of the game. If he want's the occasional sideways dig at someone, he's still way behind bitter qunts like Chappelli and our'48 mate who didn't even play in a remotely similar era to the one he feels like dissing today.

Maybe, but I darsay there was a time when Chappelli was considered an astute reader of the game.

I hope I'm wrong, but I reckon Warne will go the same way as Chappell and Harvey in due course. Probably a function of playing in a great team and comparing everyone who follows unfavourably with his contemporaries.

I too can see Warney going the way of Chappelli. For one, Warne was Chappell's protege.

The thing is, Warne holds a grudge and allows it to affect his judgement. Just look at the book he released of the Top 25 players he'd played with or against. He left out Steve Waugh but included Merv Hughes at number 18 and put Mark Waugh in the top 10.

Warne and S Waugh fell out spectacularly when the latter dropped him from the Test side back in 1999. Warne however is close mates with fellow Victorian Merv Hughes, and fellow associate of John the bookmaker, Mark Waugh.

Warne does have a great cricket brain, but don't be suprised if he turns into a hybrid of Ian Chappell and Neil Harvey in 20 years time.

I reckon he will go the other way. Once the players he has played with/against all go there will be nobody left for him to display his bias, allowing him to concentrate on the game.

I'd allow him to retain a Richie-esque bias towards leggies

Warney's words are probably pretty much ghost-written anyway.

Or at least transcribed from a series of impulse statements.

Warne will definitely go the way of Chappell. He put down Ravi Bopara before the last ashes because him and Warne had a little run in during a county game about 2 years earlier. It's similar to how he feels about Collingwood. Collingwood gave Warne a taste of his own medicine (ie sledged him back) during the 06-07 ashes, and Warney has been bad mouthing him ever since.
