Amunugama & Malmeewala called Herath "shorty" because he only had five christian (??) names.

And there's many poor Brazilians with only one name... Ronaldo, Rivaldo etc.

There needs to be some sort of charity set up whereby Sri Lankans can donate names they don't need to those who truly do.

378 Test wickets now ... that's quite a few even if averaged out on a per-name basis, but I point him out today because he's in some danger of being a 40 year old cricketer soon, and he may now be Test cricket's last active connection with 1999.

I hope he sticks around long enough to get to 400 (and even more if it means he pushed Harby down the list of finger spinners).

Interesting you raise the 1999 thing - I was just thinking the other day whether Jimmikins was the last player left who played with or against Steve Waugh, having completely forgotten that Herath debuted against us in 1999.

Retiring after this game.

Legend. And such a likeable, modest man. Cricinfo Interview Linky

You've taken more five-wicket hauls in the fourth innings than any other bowler - including Muttiah Muralitharan and Shane Warne. What's enabled you to do that?

The first thing we should look at is where I've got those five-wicket hauls - a lot of them have been in Sri Lanka where it turns. Also pitches turn the most in the fourth innings, and I feel my strength is bowling line and length for long spells. You get a lot of support from the surface when you do that. Those are the reasons for that record, I think.

I mean, imagine if they'd asked a comparable question of guys like Harby, Swann or Ajmal.

So is he officially a bigger name than WPCU Joseph Chaminder Vaas (who paradoxically must have the shortest family name in Sri Lanka)

Yes. Shame that he's retiring.

Person who'll take his position over as leader of the spin attack is a 36 year old...

Who replaces him as the longest-active Test player (Test cricket’s Father of the House, in political speak)?

Jimmy Anderson debuted in 2003, can anyone else still going beat that? Maybe there’s another obscure one who first appeared a long time before really establishing himself, as was the case with Herath?
