Do they deduct points for poor pitches in the Ranji trophy? Any reason to think it's the pitch to blame?

too soon to say. rajasthan have scored more than double the first innings total of hyderabad for the loss of just one wicket. at lunch on day 1!

More importantly, it was a debutant Deepak Chahar who devastated Hyd by picking 8/10 in 7 overs.

You may know some of this already but here goes....

It's the Indian version of country cricket,so it's the FC tournament.

Teams playing - the Indian states, some cities and all India organizations (e.g Indian Railways). The states should be self explanatory; the cities (I think) were in there for historical reasons most likely because they were powerhouses in the game (Bombay, Hyderabad come to mind) and had the depth to field strong teams. SMG and SRT, for example, played for Bombay, and not the state (Maharastra, which was typically a much weaker team).

Not sure about the historical background/ rationale for the Indian Railway like teams. I think way back when, probably before Independence (1947) these organizations had the deep pockets to support FC teams.

The Australian equivalent would be (limited example) - all the states (Western Australia, Queensland, NSW etc), then Perth, Melbourne etc, and also (say) the Aussie Transport Corporation.

When I was in India the teams were divided into geographical zones but that ahs changed; it is a two tier structure now with two top teams (IIRC) from each tier advancing to a knock out stage,

There are (IIRC) more than 20 maybe 25 teams.

So effectively the Super League is division 1, and the Plate League is Division 2.

And the best three from each Div 1 group, along with the best team from the two Div 2 groups go into a knockout finals series.

And the two Div 2 teams that make the finals get promoted to Div 1, while the bottom team in each Div 1 Group go down.

Is that right?

Ambati Rayudu, once touted as the next big thing in Indian batting, is on 173 not out for Baroda.

200* at close and thats more than what Hyderabad scored in both innings. He had joined ICL after he had to leave Hyderabad team reportedly due to internal politics. And he is only 25, so hopefully he will represent India in some form in future.

He's a long, long way down the pecking order. Behind Vijay, Pujara, Kohli, Rohit, Mukund, Dhawan, and Rahane at least.

Will need two Ranji seasons averaging 60+ before he is in contention.

I still remember an Under 19 tour to England a few years ago and Rayudu looked really good back then. Almost single handedly winning a couple of games.

Shame not much came of him.

He quickly got the label 'the next Tendulkar', proceeded to have a couple of poor seasons in the Ranji trophy after that labelling, then f*cked off to the ICL for a couple of years.

Meanwhile, Wasim Jaffer really is a run machine for Mumbai. Two centuries in the match for him against Saurashtra.
