Re: Australia v Sri Lanka, 2nd ODI, Sydney, Nov 5, 2010
I remember going to a WSC game at the SCG in the early to mid 80s, Aus v WI and we were behind the whole game. But there was rain approaching and the mighty AB did some savvy hitting. Just as the rain got heavy he hit a 4 to take us in front on run-rate for the only time in the innings. It started to really p!ss down and the umpies said "That'll do boys". It, and AB, was grouse.Fred Nerk wrote:For a while it sedemed like it was pissing down at roof level but it was all evaporating before it hit the ground.

Yeah - I remember that night. The next day some bloke in the Age alleged the game was fixed and all kinds of legal ructions followed.

If Watson was injured in that sheer moment of calamity, I think it would be second only to the guy who broke a rib whilst sneezing, for clumsiest injuries of all time.

Hard to beat this one ....
Rick Darling
Australian Rick Darling was a bit of a dasher as an opener. His finest innings came at Sydney in 1978-79, when he smashed 91 in a low-scoring match against England. At Adelaide, Darling almost died when the gum he was chewing lodged in his throat after he was hit on the heart by a ball from Bob Willis. John Emburey managed to dislodge the offending item with a thump to the chest. In the subsequent tour, Darling was hit on the head by Kapil Dev and was never seen again on the Test scene.

Clarke hitting Watson with that throw was just as hilarious at the ground.
The game being stopped because of rain three times was rather annoying.

Remember the time Rick Darling tried to make a sliding save on the boundary & ended up caught in the signage on the fence? Obviously very accident prone!

This is rivalling the some of our grim runs of the mid-80s. But even then in the WSC there was normally a relative easy-beat in the tri-series that enabled us to grab a win here and there. Even in the dreadful 85-86 season when NZ beat us home and away in the Tests, we managed to win the World Series Cup, beating India 2-0 in the Final.
This current run is the pox.

watching at the ground, I noticed the Australian's body language was nothing like what it used to be.
And I see Ponting will sit out the next match to play a shield game.

So the Australian public will only support their cricket team if they're winning? seems a bit fragile.

It can't be good for any team to play three games and change the captain each time. Clarke-Ponting-Clarke, then Ponting again for the first test.

it shouldn't really matter, players should perform regardless of who is the captain is

Re: Australia v Sri Lanka, 2nd ODI, Sydney, Nov 5, 2010
But Aus used to be a symbol of stability. 6-7 years ago you had the same core group of 12-13 players and you stuck to them in every game. Ponting wouldn't have missed tomorrow's match if his own game was in top shape, ie 6-7 years ago.
It's amazing how quickly things become unstable once the team stops winning, and the instability ends up affecting the team and vice versa.
When was the last time Aus played the same team in two consecutive games?

I wonder what mediocre dross our selectors will dish up for todays game to ensure a 'lankan whitewash?

I remember Brad Young doing something similar, and it finished him too ... a Sozzie thing, perhaps?
