Meanwhile, George Bailey gets his file market NTPFA:

Doherty 'shafted' by selectors: Bailey
Patrick Caruana
January 18, 2011 - 3:14PM

AAP

Tasmanian captain George Bailey says spinner Xavier Doherty has been "basically shafted" by national selectors, who left him out of the World Cup squad.

The left-arm tweaker was overlooked for the 15-man squad, in favour of dropped Test bowler Nathan Hauritz, despite having more wickets and being more economical in domestic one-day cricket this season.

"It's hard to know what to tell Xavier, his performances speak for themselves. They're outstanding and have been for two or three years," he told AAP.

"He's clearly Australia's best performed one-day spinner, domestically.

"He's obviously performed really well in the few chances he's had with Australia, and then he's just basically shafted."

Bailey said he was at a loss to explain why selectors hadn't picked a second spinner for the tournament, which gets underway next month in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, known for producing spin-friendly decks.

"They're going to play a World Cup in countries which are traditionally good turners... and they're going in with one spinner," Bailey said.

"I think he and Nathan Hauritz would've complimented each other beautifully over there.

"I'm just not sure part-time spin will bowl you to a World Cup victory, but hopefully they will prove me wrong."

Doherty had the figures of 0-40 from seven overs in Australia's six-wicket victory over England on Sunday, but took four wickets on debut against Sri Lanka in November.

Bailey said Doherty deserved another chance.

"I don't think he had his best game at the MCG, but he could've had a stumping in his first two overs, which changes your day," he said.

"I would hate to think the Australian cricket team is being picked on one game, but you wouldn't know what they're doing at the moment."

Bailey criticised the selectors for not telling players what they needed to do to improve after they were dropped from the national team.

"He (Doherty) gets told mixed messages about what he's supposed to be doing, and then when he's told he's not in the team, he's given very little direction to come back for us," he said.

"And this is not just Xavier, but I think all players that are dropped out of that Australian squad.

"I think communication from the top to players coming back is pretty ordinary."

I'd love Podge or someone else to come out and state simply "Hild!ck and his cronies are a bunch of qunts. That is all."

Ferguson would be my first choice, but there is a lack of left handers in the batting order.

It's a shame McKay got injured, would have picked him before Hastings

I wouldn't be surprised if the NSP sent both of them. I would be equally as unsurprised if the NSP sent neither of them.

OK, so they really are just drawing the names out of a hat now. Omit Hauritz when he's in red-hot form, choose him when he's had no match play, choose other bowlers to play the games in which he could regain his match fitness and mojo ... you couldn't make it up. This is worse than incompetence ... the selectors are 5th columnists.

With Marsh coming into the JAMODI squad for Paris, would have to say he is the front runner if Paris doesn't go to the Gilly.

Fark me Bog was impressive tonight. No mindless slogging. Just hitting balls into gaps and hitting the odd short ball over the boundary.

He has done pretty well in JAMODIs for Aust.

He's a bit injury prone though (as most seem to be these days).

Post by Zat Tue 18 Jan 2011, 20:30

OK, I've had a chance to think about the squad named.

And I have to say I still don't get it.

One front-line spinner for a tourment in the sub-continent? Sorry, I don't get it. I know Smith, White and D Hussey can send down a few overs. So can - occasionally - Clarke, but shouldn't there be at least one more front line spinner? And as Henry mentioned yesterday, Hilditch's explanation 'Hauritz's ODI record in India is excellent' when the reality is 7 matches, 4 wickets @ 70.75... I reckon I'd have half a chance to bowl that 'well'.

Pace all over the place? Sorry, I don't get it. There isn't one of Lee, Tait, Johnson, or Bollinger who I would call consistent. And consistency is king in ODI cricket. Especially in India and Sri Lanka. And while on the subject of pace, Watson is also there. As is John Hastings.

I can live without Hopes being in the sqaud, he's been overtaken as an all-rounder by Watto.

But as far as batting is concerned, I reckon Bog and Podge in particular can feel hard done by. Maybe one of those will be a late inclusion when M Hussey's hammy doesn't come good.

One comment elsewhere that I've read says something about game plans on the subcontinent neding to be formulated on the run. And our captain, besides being out of form with the bat, and recovering from a finger injury, isn't exactly known for being flexible.

And the selection of injured players, especially on the basis that 'the first game is against Zimbabwe, so they have extra time to recover' frightens the hell out of me. Teams that take Zimbabwe lightly at World Cups do so at their peril. As Australia and England both found out before the Zimmers attained Test status.

I have this horrible feeling that the 2011 World Cup will be a short one for Australia.

Then again, that may not be such a bad thing. If it is taken into consideration when the 'review' of Australian cricket happens after the tournament.

taips, thanks for trying to make me feel better about it, but everybody knows it doesn't matter who South africa names. Your guys will do quite nicely up until the point when a win is absoultely vital. At which point they'll fold like a house of cards.

Not that I'm a big fan of Spanky's deluded rantings, but his comment on Hilditch's justification for picking Hauritz made me laugh.
The sexually-confused, former English cricketer, idolised by Red, wrote:Hilditch has stretched a point by saying [Hauritz] has excellent ODI figures in India... It's a worse record than Chirpy Chirpy Cheap Cheap, an unchallenging ditty that once won the Eurovision Song Contest.
OK, he misspelt the name of the song, and it never won the ESC, but the point more or less stands.

No. Impossible. Even if miraculously, Australia somehow fail to finish above Zimbabwe, Kenya, and Canada in their group, and get knocked out after the group stage, they will still have been in the World Cup for six weeks.

Roebuck's post confirm his lack of children. Chirpy Cheep Cheep is a Wiggles staple and to the extent it can keep the kids quiet for even a few seconds, it is up there with Beethoven's 5th.
