The News of the World to cease publication?
The News of the World was very quick to insist that the cricketers they condemned in their no-ball eposé should have received life bans.
When the unrelated phone-hacking scandal finally breaks wide open, and when (sorry if) the NOTW is found to be guilty as all feck, will they think it appropriate to receive a life ban on publishing this sh1tty little newspaper? (Given that the crime - breaking the law in order to make a huge profit and then consistently lying about what youi've done - is quite similar.)

Sadly, there's a huge market for the scabrous shite it peddles, which is why its hacks go to the lengths they do.

To be honest I wasn't seriously suggesting cessation might happen. They're a bunch of hypocrites and they'll soon weasle their way out of any punishment that might be coming. There's no way they'll cease publication. It's fine for them to ruin any number of lives by any dodgy means and lies they like, but when the boot's on the other foot it's a different matter altogether. Tabloid papers like the News of the World, Sun, Daily Mail etc. are the pits, not even good enough for toilet paper because the filthy lying newsprint rubs off, leaving your ar5e much dirtier than it started.

Quite. But if you use something thats raison d'etre is to smear sh!t all over the place to wipe your arse then you only have yourself to blame.

Re: The News of the World to cease publication?
I don't mind the stories which are just plain ridiculous (such as Hilary Clinton, above). They're harmless really. But these papers really do ruin lives without ever taking blame for anything. Now and again they're wrapped on the knuckles, but they always worm there way back up again. Kelvin McKenzie, an oafish yobbish bully, spread horrible malicious lies about the people of Liverpool whilst editing The Sun. He was proved to be a liar but he's still being invited to contribute his views on British society to programs like Question Time. And sadly scousers still buy the Sun in their thousands. The incompetant vainglorious Piers Morgan was rightly sacked by the Mirror for printing blatantly fake photos which have quite possibly, if indirectly, caused extra deaths at the hands of those with already enough reason to distrust our army. Since then his career goes (inexplicably) from strength to strength. The Daily Mail has a sh1tty gloom ridden 90 % made-up story on its front page every day which gives small minded people constant fodder for their bigotted views and lets them sound off to all and sundry, bringing potentially decent people down to their level. And so it goes on and on.
Oh dear, it's true; these people and their nasty little mucksheets do indeed test my optimistic ouitlook to the limit.
Still, my wife gave me a box set of Fry and Laurie's Jeeves and Wooster as a Valentine's present. What ho!! Soon be back to my perky self. Pip pip!

That really is scary. One day you're a beautiful TV starlet, then - almost overnight - you're a grotesque international symbol of obesity, and perhaps too a warning to all young brides and their prospective husbands of a future they hadn't contemplated.
... and Polythene Pam in the chair a few posts above is almost as scary.

At least she got four years to live, while Michael Douglas only got three months.

It'll be interesting to see how the phone-hacking thing plays out - everyone that has sued them so far, having discovered their voicemails had been accessed, has walked away six or seven figures richer. Given that only a handful of cases have been brought and settled to date as the extent of the hacking continues to be a developing story, you'd have to think the NoW is going to be stung for millions when all is said and done.
Now the Met have finally pulled their fingers out and widened and intensified their investigation, they're saying they've uncovered "reasonable evidence" that "up to 20" more people were targeted. And still the number rises. According to the Guardian "there are 120 people who were identified by three mobile phone companies who followed up on Scotland Yard's original investigation and found that some of their users had had their voicemail accessed from numbers used by Glenn Mulcaire (the private investigator jailed for his work on behalf of the NoW)." Surely they'll all sue. And surely they'll all win.
Not that it'll put too much of a dent in Murdoch's bank balance, but given the ever-dwindling support for print "news" in the digital age, I wonder how much money a paper like the NoW can afford to lose News International before they pull the plug.
Re: The News of the World to cease publication?
Well here's hoping. I'd be amazed if they hadn't been hacking into phones for years. I mean, why wouldn't they do it whenever they could? They never thought they'd be caught so the only thing stopping them would be some kind of decency or respect (maybe for people's privacy or the law). Like I said, 'Why wouldn't they?'
As for Murdoch, there will probably only ever be small victories against him, but they're welcome just the same. Affairs like this one, or little episodes such as the recent Sky sackings, must annoy him at some level and all chip away at his claims of being anything other than a greedy chancer with no real sense of right and wrong.
