Le Tour de Pharmaceutical
Starts in a couple of weeks. Even though its throughly compromised as a sporting event, its still a very watchable event, if nothing more than the scenery or Gabriel Gate's recipes.

Re: Le Tour de Pharmaceutical
It's one of the best spectacles in sport, once you understand all the different aspects of it, but the doping issue always casts a shadow over it and it may be that no winner in decades has competed "clean". Last year's was a classic for a number of reasons but the Contador issue has since taken something away from that.
What would happen if it were to be the first sport to "admit defeat" on the issue and admit you probably couldn't even finish the event, let alone win, without the help of substances currently banned? Would it just end up with numerous competitors killing themselves with cocktails of drugs, and all the sponsors abandoning it as well?
Anyway, last year was the centenary of the Pyrenees in the Tour, this year it's the turn of the Alps, and I look forward to seeing the spectacular Alpe d'Huez climb return to the route after a couple of years' absence. That was the stage that first got me hooked on this a few years back.

So the blokes in the event sixty, seventy, eighty years ago were on the stuff? You really believe that? And they did it on bikes a lot less techie than today's machines. What would happen if it were to be the first sport to "admit defeat" on the issue and admit you probably couldn't even finish the event, let alone win, without the help of substances currently banned?

Not the same stuff, but people took all sorts back in the day, alcohol, amphetamines, you name it, to help them get around. There probably weren't any official rules or testing, but competitors have probably always sought artificial assistance of some sort in an event as tough as this.

Re: Le Tour de Pharmaceutical
After the Armstrong episode most riders have probably thrown their hands in the air and said "Fark it! Open season". So the field v Contador could be a good bet.

It will always be a contest of who can produce the most undetectable juice. If the officials just throw their hands up, it will become a contest of who can produce the most powerful juice.
I'm with Zoggy, I don't think the original champs were juiced. I wonder when the first doping took place, though?

There's a list of recipes to improve performance for ancient athletes that predates the first (ancient) olympics. The IOC has actually had doping regulations since day one but could never enforce them as they couldn't test for them.
For the first half of last century doping was proved only via autopsy after the mug got a bit too heavy handed with the gogo juice.

Re: Le Tour de Pharmaceutical
Here you go
Lucien Aimar, himself caught for doping, said: "Simpson had taken, at most, 30mg [of amphetamine]. Had it not been for his anaemic state he wouldn't have died. What killed him wasn't the dope, nor Ventoux even though it was so hot. The true guilt lay with medical science. What pushed him into his coffin was the person who administered an intravenous drip, the thing that made it possible for him to go on restarting [each day]."

Re: Le Tour de Pharmaceutical
There have been allegations of doping in the Tour de France since the race began in 1903. Early Tour riders consumed alcohol and used ether, among other substances, as a means of dulling the pain of competing in endurance cycling

Re: Le Tour de Pharmaceutical
Interesting. So sportsmen have always been cheats. A bit sad, really.
I think I may have related this story before, but we have very good friends who are baseball fans. They were indignant when I suggested some years ago that most of the big baseball stars were juiced to the eyeballs on Roids. This was after the likes of Mark McGwire and Barry Bonds were breaking records left, right and centre. Funny how they came out and admitted their cheating at the ends of their careers. Laugh, I PMS.

Re: Le Tour de Pharmaceutical
It's more an issue in purely speed/endurance based sports, as it's much harder to improve skill through artificial means. You could make a fast bowler more powerful through doping but you couldn't give him the ability to pitch it on a line and length...

Some work colleagues are going on a riding trip for charity next month. One of their days will include climbing the Alpe d"Huez. Freaking madness.

Starts today.
Stage #1
Watch out for two Tossies, Mat Goss & Richie Porte. Both are expected to influence the result.

Re: Le Tour de Pharmaceutical
Can someone explain why the last stage is a bit of a joke. Wasn't the runner-up something like half a minute or so behind the leader at the start of this stage last year but it was still treated like some carnival. Or does the tour technically finish at the penultimate stage.

There is an unwritten rule between the riders that no-one challenges the leader on the ride into Paris so essentially the race is decided on the second last stage.
