Is the Hutton/Washbrook 359 in Jo'burg 48-49 any of those?
Or the Hobbs/Sutcliffe's 323 in Melbourne almost a century ago?

He did occasionally, especially early on in his career as here (he was 23). He opened throughout this series. Last time I remember him opening was with Brian Close against Pakistan at The Oval in 1967.

So he was, a lifelong one too, but his partner was a pear at this time, although he later hopped it.

H & W made England's record opening stand going in first certainly but the Saffies replied with 315 - 44 behind so slightly outside the criteria I set. I think you mean Hobbs and Rhodes, not Sutcliffe who hadn't made his fc debut at that time. Hobbs and Rhodes batted second after Oz had been shot out for 191 and so features in Skully's previous question not mine. However Hobbs and both his famous partners do feature in the list.

Indeed squire, apologies but the machine I'm doing this on is a complete load of junk.

Re: The 2011 Trivia Thread (II)
Update:
1st wicket stand of side batting first >50 above opposition total batting second
1) 204 - V.H.Mankad & P.Roy (413/1) v. NZ (209), Madras (Chennai), January 1956
2) No Jones alas but Garth's namesake give the porkers a fry-up in surpassing above.
3) Solitary Antipodean captain and lonely Mendelssohn man slice through grapefruit.
4) Most runs & most wickets come to the table
5) Hammerman & toothpaste guy in wacky run chase on the table cloth.
6) Top tonner & Tyke favourite give Yarpie runaround in Chamberlain hideout.
7) The good doctor and one of Shropshire's capital lads dish out medicine on a round tablet
8 ) 90 - P.E.Richardson & M.C.Cowdrey (174/1) v. Australia (84), Old Trafford, July 1956.
9) 74 - G.R.Marsh & M.A,Taylor (329/1) v. England (255), Trent Bridge, August 1989.
10) Languid bully gives Yarpies the bird from Paddington to Randwick
11) A later self-slaughterer near HQ combined with a bedside manner to leave the colonials with egg on face as well as on ground.
12) An insect on vehicle gets a fruity delivery at rally's end
13) 55 - M.A.Taylor & M.J.Slater (260/1) v. England (205), Lord's, June 1993.
Hobbs features with both his famous partners as I said above but not against Oz.
Correction: the Marsh-Taylor stand was, of course, at Trent Bridge in the 5th Test not Headingley in the 1st.

Not very good jocular reference to the "Bangers" i.e. pork sausages, I'm afraid But you're right:
1st wicket stand of side batting first >50 above opposition total batting second
1) 204 - V.H.Mankad & P.Roy (413/1) v. NZ (209), Madras (Chennai), January 1956

There are three references to Cape Town (but not all at the same ground) although H & S isn't one of them although the pair does feature. 5) is a more modern reference.

One of Fingal-ton's anti-Saff tons in 1936?
PS: Wasn't he frozen out by the Don? Or alienated in some other way? This is just back-of-the-mind stuff.

Didn't Sutcliffe - being a Tyke toff (well, upper middle clasaass) and debonair for the age - have some advertising contracts?
I thought "hob" was some sort of cobbler connection (not in Danny's sense), hammering nails into boots.

And you would be correct. A man of culture and discernment, obviously. I'm pleased you picked up the "Fingal's Cave" aka Hebrides Overture reference.
