A combined £65ish million for Andy Carroll, Jordan Henderson and Charlie Adam? Deary me.
Any clubs looking to make some money for old rope - flog a player to Liverpool. They're pissing it away on any old shite.
Makes Suarez look a bargain.
He must have been an accident
According to his mother, yes.

Dalglish knows what he is doing.
Yes. Pissing away someone else's hard-earned. On shite.

Liverpool are signing all the central midfielders to stop Man Utd from having them, while United are signing all the wingers to stop Liverpool having them... this summer seems to be an exercise in signing players who you don't need or who might be first choice in a few years' time.
Hard to see who the big winners are, apart from Barcelona...

Well they're supposedly going to get Downing for £19m so that'll sort everything out. A cut price English midfielder.
Re: The Football Thread - 2011/12
Jebus. I'm starting to wonder if it's all an insurance scam. Load the club with billions of pounds worth of assets and then burn it to the ground in a mysterious electrical dildo mishap.
Downing for £19 million. I'm becoming increasingly convinced I could fetch a few thousand in the current climate. I've got my own boots and everything.

They've obviously seen some marketing somewhere..... 'You too could become as good as Sunderland for just £84mn sterling'

Liverpool have signed keeper Alexander "Mahendra Singh" Doni (as I'm sure he isn't nicknamed).
Their other keeper is Reina of course - any other goalkeepers out there who share their names with Indian cricketers?

Re: The Football Thread - 2011/12
Tevez move falls through. Don't think any of the possibilities are great for City now, either he goes on strike or retires, or they have the uncertainty of having him for probably half a season while missing out on a replacement, or they are forced to loan him out.
I think the whole episode will have a major impact on their chances of stepping up to title contenders or even staying in the top four.

I'd be surprised if any of that turns out to be correct, Beamer. Why would he strike or retire?
I expect there'll still be interest from Spain, which Tevez would consider as his family might move there. Or Italy..
Whatever happens it looks like Aguero will be arriving this summer, and Balo and Dzeko should improve on their first season in the Premiership.
Staying in the top four? You think Liverpool, Spurs and Arsenal will be better than us next season? Or Chelsea for that matter - we were equal on points don't forget. Even the Man U is starting with more new faces than usual, and I don't see Giggs making too many appearances given the grief he's going to get.
Looks pretty good to me..

I just think he's made it clear he doesn't want to go back there, and he's threatened to quit the game at an early age before. He's someone I can see putting his family first even if it does mean prematurely calling time on his career. And if the whole saga means you miss out on Aguero or another top drawer replacement it could be costly.
Realistically it's 4 into 5 with Spurs likely to be a bit off the pace, but any of the five could win it and any of them with the possible exception of United could slip into a costly fifth place. A lot will depend on the remaining transfer activity.

Aye - obviously it's a load of ifs and buts, but I do think Citeh's confidence will be higher this season with the monkey off our back (of winning something again).
Of course it remains to be seen how we cope with the additional pressure of the CL which is a new thing for the club if not some of the players.
As you say, it will be interesting to see who else comes in..

Wish our window closed this month, with the incredibly tiresome Fabregas, Modric, Tevez etc. transfer sagas. We could have another six weeks of all of them! Don't agree with transfer windows really but if we have to have them, surely they should close before the season properly starts.

He might decide to stay, if nobody offers him enough baksheesh.

Re: The Football Thread - 2011/12
The new season is officially underway! North of the border, at least... another couple of weeks for us to wait for the Community Shield and English lower leagues.
Not quite sure when one season ends and the next one starts really these days, with international tournaments pretty much overlapping with the early qualifying rounds of European competitions.

Aguero confirmed at City now. It's been a while since we've seen a signing that the Premier League neutral will be excited about seeing in this country, but he could be that player. I know there's no guarantees and South American players have a mixed record here, but he seems to have the right attitude and is certainly saying the right things so far.
Puts a bit of pressure back on the established title contenders, whose transfer activities this summer have been a mixture of underwhelming and non-existent so far.

Fulham kicked off the same competition in June I think. And Birmingham, a Championship club in financial meltdown, enter it at a later stage...
Will be interesting to see who Arsenal get in the CL qualifier. Would be great to see them mess that one up, after contriving to finish fourth in a two-horse title race!

He's not that amazing. He'll do well, I'm sure, but he's not as good as Tevez.
