I think realistically we should be 5th. Don't think we would beat NZ on current form, though will be an interesting Ashes warm-up against them where we have home advantage. Pakistan can be anything from TAYPOC to unstoppable, but on average they'd probably beat us. There's little to choose between 3rd and 7th though, and any of them would have a chance against the Aussies on home territory as well.

There's no doubt of that; we really struggle away at present, particularly on the subcontinent, but also in the Emirates and on English and South African wickets (cough, 47, cough). I'm not convinced that we won't lose a Test in the West Indies.

Well, my apologies. I thought you were being very deliberately droll, lampooning karti's efforts to find reasons for India's poor overall ranking (and I LOL'd at that rationale). India's ranking actually seems lower to me than it should be based on their performances (a Test won in England, a 4-0 win at home over Australia) over the last couple of years.

NZ has come up from a low base.

Who is though? It has to be the lowest standard of teams in my lifetime... There're sinkhole sized chinks in the armour of all teams. Some less so than others. 2nd best is 2nd best on the crapheap

Still, it's more interesting than Australia being miles ahead of everyone else. Excellence can be very tedious.

Totally agree - it's difficult to predict who will win any given series. That's got to be a good thing. It's because of this though, that #1 doesn't hold the gravitas it should do.
