Phrases that raise your hackles / make you cringe ...

I remember one of our happy band of Bailers saying a couple of years ago that the term "unAustralian" (in an ethical, sanctimonious sense) made him cringe. Was it Bradman? I'm not sure.

Others have pointed out how annoying "Ian Bell - Form of His Life" can be.


Seriously, one that has grated on me recently is "his own people". Mubarak setting spies and shock troops on his own people; Ghaddafi ordering the army to fire on and brutalise his own people; Assad turning cannons and bombs on his own people.

But these people are not the private possession of their national tyrant.

If it were a monarch or emperor, then according to that (anachronistic) system, you could technically claim the population was "his/her subjects".... but abuse of power would still point up the rotten mendacity of the possessive.

With a president/prime minister, the supposed claim is generally at most of a national mandate, and some sort of civic duty of responsibility.

The only responsibility such as Mubarak, Ghaddafi, Assad (and others) appear capable of is responsibility for mismanagement, self-righteous parasitism, systemic surveillance ..... and then bloodshed on an increasingly brutal scale when they are challenged.


The most that the misguided phrase "his own people" can highlight, is an implied treachery from the centre of the political system.

But the whole problem is, it assigns the victims to their exploiter (and murderer).

As in "you want me to do what"?

Well, a lot of acronyms used to do my head in. Miles too American for my tastes. But, thanks to the internet we're all that little bit more American. I'm a little desensitised. Although, I'd still rather people used the words in speech rather than the acronym.

And I hate every one of them.

There's a few I like and do occasionally use, probably because you can say them rather than having to spell them out

DINKY DI: Double income, no kids yet - dog instead
CORGI: couple of really gruesome individuals
WOMBAT: waste of money brains and time
FUBAR: f*cked up beyond all recognition

The current 'rankler' for me is 'app'

When I see it written I automatically say "application" to my self...when people verbalise "app", I chew my tongue...the latest stitches are due to be taken out any day now
