Aaahh. SA, the Waterloo of all great modern English captains. Hussain, Vaughan and now Strauss. The only exception is KP but then again they say he is a Saffie?
Will Indians ever learn any lessons? Dhoni not only lost the no 1 tage for us but also led us to rock bottom in Eng/Aus and still he is the nation's toast and BCCI's blue eyed boy.

So, looks like we're going off to India with a top six of Cook, Trott, Bell and three youngsters (or two plus Chavi Flops). Can we do any better than the Snoozers out there?

It has only been one poor series for the bowlers. That should be well better than what New Zealand have doled out.

Sounds like something you'd buy at a take-away in Barnsley.beamer wrote:(or two plus Chavi Flops).

I expect the batting to fold just like NZ though, we saw that last winter in the UAE against Pakistan.tricycle wrote:It has only been one poor series for the bowlers. That should be well better than what New Zealand have doled out.
I had expected Strauss to lead the team to India then perhaps step down after a heavy defeat giving Cook a couple of (hopefully) gentle warm-up series wirh NZ before the big one next summer. But new England captains have to be thrown in at the deep end I guess...

Aye, the batting's a worry, but we've hardly been great in recent times. It really is only one good win against New Zealand since that series in Australia.beamer wrote:I expect the batting to fold just like NZ though, we saw that last winter in the UAE against Pakistan.tricycle wrote:It has only been one poor series for the bowlers. Re: Strauss to resign?
Whatever Straaaaaaass does (and it sure looks like a resignation), I'd go against the current of reddened tits above, and say I think Baz did the decent thing with this thread.
Trike scooped the story, fair fecks to him - but he stuck it on the butt of one of Trev's acid missiles, which is hardly a fair or balanced send-off for a jolly good egg, ...... and England's most successful Ashes captain since ..... errrrrm ........... errrrrm ............ errrrrm ....

NTR is a fine Bails tradition that MUST be upheld, Pete, no matter how upstanding the poster or the topic.
And these acid missiles you speak of - LCD suppositories - mainlining gawn bad??

Re: Strauss to resign?
A great worry is that if he goes (as seems likely, etc.), he is handing over to a captain who is no more enterprising and, if anything, even less possessive of a clue with the willow in recent games than Andrew.
Cooky must be setting some sort of record for the most wayward graph in Test cricket. He started strong, with a ton (like Strauss I think), dipped as his technique went arseways, built another solid base, slumped again, had a golden Australian summer in 2010-11, and has since then again fallen over in his stance again, played a crooked bat, and looked as amateurish as his top-hat helmet.
What is Gucci doing for his dosh?!?!

But I say discretion should be exercised by the great gods that are our Bailsian Elders.
For verily, THIS is a thread worthy of the occasion - - not a starlet's tossing-her-gorgeous-mane-of-hair-back with a huff and/or a baby's throwing-the-balls-out-of-the-pram tantrum!
Besides, Red hasn't been with us THAT long, has she? .... to establish a time-honoured tradition .....

Re: Strauss to resign?
Another obv question is, presuming Strauss doesn't just step down from the captaincy and work on his batting to stay in the team (possible), is it a foregone conclusion that the much-heralded Joe Root will be blooded in India?
If not, then who?
If not, then who?

Yes, West Indies accounted for Illingworth, 3 captains in 1988 (with the help of a barmaid) and Atherton. I suppose Gooch was the last England captain to fall to Australia with Botham before him (although West Indies played a significant role with the latter). India accounted for Fletcher and Pakistan Willis with India accounting for Gower's first effort at captaincy (again with more than a little help from the West Indies, to whom he had lost in 10 consecutive Tests) and Australia the second. You're right, Dhoni is practically unsackable.

Dhoni is worth his place in the Indian team, though. Strauss is an absolute passenger.

(forumming from my iPhone, and god is it difficult)
Farewell straussy. You weren't a great tactical captain, but your results are there for everyone to see. Statistically one of the greatest English captains of all time.
Ps- I want a flaming nails app.
