Close claimed he was being interviewed for a book about Yorkshire cricket and needed a smoke to help with his memory.

Southampton beat Inter Milan, Tottenham and Liverpool to highly rated Croatian centre back Dejan Lovren, 23, from Lyon.
Bit of a coup, that. Ambitious.

I hope Robbie Kruse brings his 'A' game tonight. He was the difference last week.lardbucket wrote:lardbucket wrote:So if we can defeat Iraq, we [Peter Allan]go to Rio?[/Peter Allan]

I hope Osieck starts Archie Thompson. We looked a different side against Jordan when he came on.
And agreed on Robbie Kruse, he had a blinder.

How did New Zealand lose to Tahiti in the continentals? Even sheared sheep can't be that bad.

Socceroos really are a bit of an arsey team.
Lucky for them they don't qualify through the European or South American zones.

Awesome. Scrappy game played on a potato patch but huzzah for Big Josh Kennedy. We are off to RIO!!!!!
My strategy there would be to have Robbie Kruse pumping right side crosses at Josh Kennedy and Timmy Cahill all tournament. We'll make the quarters if they do that!!

Re: The Football Thread - 2013/14
Well we did have to battle the might of Oman with its giant population of two odd mill. to get through.
Must be stupid of me but I can't see why Gerard Whately thinks it's extraordinary for us to qualify.

If they don't we might struggle.
In our group only Japan has a world ranking within the top forty.
The others are around the 100 mark.
Can't see them beating the better teams playing a lacklustre brand of soccer.

I don't think they are intending to beat the better teams. Just have a good time. Party hard, etc.
I'm sure they know their place in the world.

Re: The Football Thread - 2013/14
But Wally is it fair that more highly ranked European teams for instance fail to qualify by dint of their tougher group?
In cricketing analogous terms, it seems we've beaten Bangladesh, Italy and Ireland to win through to the World Cup semis.

Re: The Football Thread - 2013/14
Josh Kennedy's goal allowed Aus to dodge a bullet. If I'm reading the qualifiers right, we would've had a home-and-away series v 3rd placed Asian Group A team. ATM Korea lead Group A on 14, then Iran on 13 and Uzbekistan on 11. Tonight the Uzbeks play Qatar at home, a solid 3 point chance. That would take them to 14. Korea have Iran at home. depending on the result, Aus could've ended up playing any one of Korea, Iran or Uzbekistan, none an easy task.
