Utter c*nt but despite this he did well for us for the most part.

Will be tough to follow although Buttler couldn't have started much better.

Regardless of the aforementioned cheesiness, the man was outstanding for a three period and integral to our 'era' of excellence. Tragic way for a career to end

Seems to be a wicketkeeper curse at the moment. Explains Haddin's longevity.

Kieswetter was tragic, Prior at least had a long and successful career behind him.

We will struggle to find another wicketkeeper to average 40+ after 50+ tests.

Although again, Buttler has a good chance as any.

Prior retires Empty Re: Prior retires

I was struck the other day by how much more likeable Jos Buttler is when compared to Matt Prior. He's a guy you really want to see succeed. Prior was a good batsman to watch in Tests and, although his glove-work was never much more than passable, he was a good player and contributed to a successful England side. He's another player who has succumbed to the workload expected of an England cricketer.

Was workload really an issue with Prior? He hadn't played the shorter formats for England for several years. He just absolutely lost it after he won England's cricketer of the year back in 2012. The suggestion was that he got well and truly complacent after that, and his ego outgrew his talent.

Didn't drop one off the pace bowlers for about 18 months plus. Better than passable IMO

Never seen such an improvement in a keeper. He was a complete and utter liability when he first arrived, iron gloves I believe he was called. His runs were worth nothing compared to the runs his dropped chances were conceding.

Great keeper by the end, as you say there was a period where you never noticed any mistakes.

Arguably the best keeper-batsman in world cricket for a period. A good servant for England, albeit not as beloved as some.

33's a pretty ridiculous age to be jacking in the cricket, though. Could he not reinvent himself as a specialist batsman, or has he just lost the hunger for the game now he's into cycling?

Prior retires Empty Re: Prior retires

Post by beamer Thu 11 Jun 2015, 18:37

The KP stuff may have tarnished his legacy and perhaps made sure he was consigned to the past in England terms even if he had regained fitness. But he played a big part in England's successes of recent years and probably the first England player to make a long term success of the modern keeper-batsman role. Why he couldn't do it facing a white ball I'm not sure, otherwise I suppose he might have tried to sustain a career as a freelance T20 batsman for a bit longer.

All the best, Cheesy, see you on Sky with all the others. Two England keepers retiring in a week, wonder which one will be next?

Meh ... Prior ... Never been my favourite.
He too had an ego larger than himself which he failed miserably to live up to.
Yeah, was a good keeper in England's dominant period ... but faded rapidly.

I hope to f**k we DO NOT see him on Sky.
Would be worse than the instalment of Nick (the dick) Knight.
Can't see it somehow ... he was never a fave of Athers, Naz or Both's.

I can handle a single appearance as a guest - just switch off the sound.
Anything more than that and I'll write in and complain... for all that's worth!

I mean, apart from his crass diction, the arse can barely string three words together ...
and already having one of those in the commentary box is enough !

Fair play to the Porsche man. A really good return in both disciplines especially since his comeback till the injuries.

I think the word "commentating" needs the addition of quotation marks.

Not a promising start. He may end up being the VVS Laxman of English commentary, i.e. He came, he spoke, they said he could f*ck right off.
