There is some possibility of play in the 3rd session.

In fairness to Sydney, this doesn't happen much there. I believe the last rain-forced draw was in 1995.

Ah the old Atherton declaring on Hick on 98* test.
Good times.
And all a couple of weeks before I started real work out of uni.

Yep....the one where all the commentators banged their chests and shut down the debate about the declaration, Emperor's New Clothes-style - until Gideon Haigh played the part of the smart-arse kid up the lamp-post. It is very plausible , as Haigh argued, his Big Statement torpedoed dressing room morale and England's aimless bowling that afternoon was a direct result.

It was sheer arseholery. Athers had Boycotted along in that match. 88 of 276 balls in the first innings and 66 off 167 balls in the second. That's  crabbing up a storm even for the era, especially considering the loss of overs due to the weather. Probably it would have been better for the Poms if Athers had scored a duck and let Hick bat for longer,  because he was scoring at a lively pace. He got that 98 off 166 balls, and he and Thorpe had been ticking along nicely: he wasn't  "stuck in the 90s" as some players get. Basically the reasonable expectation is that it would take one more over for Hick to get an Ashes century.

Yep - it was possibly the only time I ever felt sorry for Hick. Or at least I would have if I wasn't laughing so much at the time.

Ah ... the light.
Rather disappointing ending.
Still, I suppose SA's confidence has been boosted over all.

Sun's out. After an 11.00 am inspection, we are set for an 11.45 am start. Ho hum.
From Dickinfo:
For only the first time in more than 25 years and fifth time overall in Australia, two successive days were washed out without a ball being bowled.
Still, where's Red to bag the Sydney weather again? Of course Melbourne had a whole Test washed out in 70/71.

I also remember the final day of the 1971-72 game in Sydney being totally washed out ... we looked like winning when the ROW collapsed after a very good opening stand between Gavaskar and Ackerman. Kerry O'Keeffe was probably deprived of his finest hour in the process.

With the lack of activity in soggy Sydney there is no reason to be in this thread atm.

Rain saved us in Sydney v NZ in Jan 1974. The Sheep had us 2-30 at Stumps on Day 4, chasing 456. I remember my excitement at waking up to rain on Day 5, after watching the Hadlee brothers roll us for a shitty 162 on Day 2. My Dad, middle bro and I (in my early teens) were in the Bradman Stand going "Urk!!!" at the carnage.

The Windies bowlers have had a very torrid time of it so far, I'm sure they'll relish the opportunity to bowl on a drying pitch.

idve liked to have seen the 2nd & 3rd match innings both declared at 0-0 once the windies were all out and take the game to the end from there. wouldve been fun whether a there was a result or not
