Stokes ?? who's Stokes??
I can't understand why the poms are all shouting out because Stokes is missing, there is absolutely nothing special about him, just an average good cricketer,( with a lethal left hook) and I don't think he is missed one iotta in their team I doubt that any Australian shed any fears whether he is in or out of the poms team.A single player has to be of a lot higher standard to be missed in a team.

They miss his batting because there are so few barely competent batsmen around this set up.
They miss his bowling because after Anderson and Broad the options are village cricketers.
But primarily they miss his stomach for a fight - this team are a bunch of pansies without someone to hide behind.

I see Ben Duckett got dropped from the England tour game against CA XI after getting boozed up and pouring a drink over Jimmy Anderson.

Got to love the new generation of cricketers we're bringing through - utter pricks, the lot of them.
I guess you'd put up with it if they were actually any f*cking good at cricket.

Ben Stokes charged by police
Police in the UK release statement confirming they have charged Ben Stokes
Cricket Network

Allrounder Ben Stokes has been charged with affray following September’s late-night incident outside a Bristol nightclub that kept him from taking part in England's Magellan Ashes campaign.
Stokes, along with Bristol men Ryan Ali and Ryan Hale, have each been charged with one count of affray, Avon and Somerset Police confirmed on Tuesday.
All three men are set to appear at Bristol Magistrates' Court at a yet-to-be-confirmed date.
A man sustained a fractured eye socket in the incident.
Stokes was later suspended from international cricket until "further notice" by the England and Wales Cricket Board, meaning he missed the Ashes series in Australia.
The England and Wales Cricket Board have previously stated that its selection panel would convene with 48 fours to make a decision on Stokes' potential international return should he be charged.
While originally named in England's squad for the Ashes, Stokes played no part in their 4-0 Test series defeat.
He was also selected in the squad for the ongoing Gillette ODI series, but has since been replaced. He could still feature in next months' T20 tri-series in Australia and New Zealand if given the green light by the ECB, however that seems unlikely at this juncture.
Stokes played domestic cricket in his native New Zealand late last year but has since returned to the United Kingdom.
More to come...

Depends what you mean by serious. He's not going to get life or anything but he could be put inside for a few months at least.

A nice summary from the BBC:
It carries a maximum penalty when tried summarily - in the magistrates' court - of a fine and/or up to six months in prison, and when tried on indictment - in the crown court - of up to three years in prison.
It's going to the magistrates' court so he could get six months but I'd say that's unlikely.

The issue could be that it drags on for months so wasting another summer of his England career.
In that regard pleading guilty might be in his interest but he seems determined to contest it.

And there's the likelihood of an ECB disciplinary hearing whatever the outcome of the trial.

Not so sure about that, MoH. Affray is an "either-way offence", so whilst the trial will start in the Magistrates court - the beaks do have an option to boot it upwards to the Crown Court. Whilst I agree that they're unlikely to do that, it is possible that they may consider the CCTV footage warrants (if convicted) a longer term.

Thanks growler, I didn't know that. All my knowledge of law comes from watching This Life so it's not really my subject.

Ach, I'm no legal eagle either - but I'm pretty sure that, in some rare cases an accused can appear before magistrates within hours following arrest if it's felt that remand into custody is warranted (bail of the accused is the default position).
After the widespread 2011 riots which occurred following the shooting by police of Mark Duggan, almost 2,000 arrests were made - with almost all appearing before magistrates within hours, and courts sitting extended hours (including weekends).

Money may have changed hands ...
Can you help me here; how many punches have to land and/or knock a man down before affray becomes assault? Are injuries sustained by the victim irrelevant once you have a central contract?
