Football 2019-20 Season
I see both Bury and Bolton Wanderers have missed their financial deadlines and are basically gonna be kicked out of the Leagues.
All a bit sad, really.

Re: Football 2019-20 Season
Sounds like there’s still hope for both, with discussions ongoing. But they can’t drag it out forever, Bury haven’t played a game this season and Bolton are putting out a team of youngsters to get thrashed every week.
At worst they will start again some way down the league system, and probably rise again like Accrington, Newport, Wimbledon etc.

Wasn't it Bolton who passed into the hands of someone banned from being a company director for eight years?

AFC Wimbledon is a totally different entity to Wimbledon FC

Re: Football 2019-20 Season
Well I suppose so in a legal sense, but it’s exactly the same in that it’s the supporters restarting a club that was taken away from them, even though the circumstances were different (though the original club would probably have gone under had it not moved to MK).taipan wrote:beamer wrote:Sounds like there’s still hope for both, with discussions ongoing. Anyway I think the new club now officially owns the “Wimbledon” history, and MK Dons are regarded as a club that was formed in 2004.
All reformed clubs are separate entities in legal terms but obvious continuations of their previous incarnations, even if it often takes some years before they can have the original name back. So expect AFC Bury or Bury United (they can’t have Bury Town, as that is a non-league club from a different place called Bury!) playing in the North West Counties League or similar next season. The challenge might be getting the ground back given the complex mortgage arrangements, every chance it will just be sold off for housing.

Well, Bolton survived, at least. Will need snookers to avoid relegation, but having a team and a club on a seemingly stable footing again will be enough of a victory for their fans.

I mean, it is and it isn't. These clubs have had 100+ years to get their houses in order, yet still the overwhelming approach of English football clubs is to spend way beyond their means and hope someone will come along and bail them out when it inevitably catches up with them.
Amazingly, the majority of them keep getting away with it. Aston Villa were up financial slack alley last season and in danger of going into administration, but then a rich savior rescued them and within a few months they'd been promoted to the Premier League gravy train. They were essentially rewarded for the most reckless mishandling of their club with the goal they were after all along. No lessons learned.
Sadly, some clubs are going to have to go to the wall in order for football to acknowledge this insanity of trying to maintain 92 clubs, of which about 80 are a financial basket case teetering on the brink of implosion at any given moment. Bury won't be the last of the fallers. Perhaps not even this season.

But the 92 will always be replenished with “new money” clubs, e.g. Salford, Crawley, Forest Green in recent years... as well as those returning from oblivion.
The reason these clubs do get rescued, and reformed even if they don’t, is because they are such a part of their community. As has been commented on, speedway, basketball and ice hockey clubs in this country fall by the wayside all the time and little is said. But professional football clubs have a tradition and a life of their own. Bury will have a Football League club again one day, whether that’s in 5 years or 40. Bolton will be back in the top flight one day, the wheel will turn full circle, as it has for their fellow Wanderers of Wolverhampton, now back in Europe long after coming close to financial collapse themselves.
The club isn’t its legal entity, it is its supporters and local community. That’s why they all overspend to chase the dream. We all demand it as supporters, otherwise why bother? And that’s why they will always live on in some form or other.

And in other news...
"‘WE DID IT!’: Australia and NZ to host 2023 Women’s World Cup despite Euro snub.
Australia and New Zealand will host the 2023 Women’s World Cup after the FIFA Council voted in favour of the trans-Tasman bid over Colombia.
The successful bid received 22 of the 35 valid votes with the South Americans receiving 13.
Australia and New Zealand’s bid was bolstered by technical score of 4.1 points out of five in FIFA’s evaluation report and the event will be the first to be held across two confederations — the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and the Oceania Football Confederation."

Congrats to the team that put the winning bid together.

Hopefully Aust and NZ will be allowing foreigners to come into the country by then!
But yes, it is terrific news. Looks like I am going to have to keep my ANZ Stadium membership for another couple of years.

Yes, well done Liverpool, who would have predicted this wait back in 1990? They no longer have the embarrassment of knowing that Leeds, Blackburn and Leicester had won the title more recently than them...

Confirmed promotion. Then champions, and then following it with a good win. Perfect weekend for the club.

Manchester sides, Everton and Liverpool are all too busy hating each other to bother with Leeds, surely.

Leeds hatred of the two red teams is legendary.
I guess you can add the Manc blue team as well, but they weren't competitive during Leeds glory days.

Devon Loch, Jean van de Velde, Keegan’s Newcastle, South Africa at a CWC... all would struggle to match that.tricycle wrote:Forest yesterday, otoh. What a collapse... a prolapse, even.
We’d have sunk without trace in the play-offs anyway, but still... so many late goals conceded all season long and we paid for it eventually.

Yeah, that's true. Do they look decent for next season? And is Lamouchi is facing many questions?
The restart has not been kind to Forest, but they were one of the few teams to play Leeds off the park this season (not even Arsenal did).
