Actually you could get around the more horrific aspects of halal with a branding gate, that mightn't be kosher though.

Excuse my ignorance but how does that work? I understand halal and kosher butchery share similar methods. If so, why the hubbub about one and not the other?

Personally I am not a fan of live animal exports either.

Oddly enough as I age I am losing some of my taste for red meat. I now eat much more fish and make a lot of meat free dishes (mainly middle eastern and asian). Even with seafood I have developed a real love of squid and dolphin fish - both have sustainable fisheries in the pacific.

Well I know SFA about how cattle are slaughtered or the live export process so can someone explain to me the halal slaughter process.  Just so I can form a rational opinion.

Cattle are normally stunned before being dispatched so that they are insensible to pain prior to slaughter however in Halal Abattoirs this doesnt happen although sometimes they are stunned after having their throats cut. Kosher slaughter is similar.

Halal stunning is reversible and the animal may recover from the stunning before slaughter

Some Halal abattoirs have permission to not stun


Cant say I remember my dad stunning our sheep before he cut their throat
Can only remember giving them a day in yard to remove most of the shit and not stir them up as it made them harder to butcher
