Cricinfo are quoting different stats:-
"1.40pm Mal: "Has a permanent captain ever before had to miss what would have been the second match of his captaincy? Not sure if that has happened. But we do know this is only the 5th time in Australia's Test history that three different captains have led in three consecutive Tests. The other instances were - 1884-85 v ENG:
WL Murdoch (Adelaide), TP Horan (Melbourne), HH Massie (Sydney), JM Blackham (Sydney), 1926-28 v ENG: W Bardsley (Manchester), HL Collins (The Oval), J Ryder (Brisbane), 1953-54 v ENG: AL Hassett (The Oval), IWG Johnson (Brisbane), AR Morris (Sydney), and 1956-57 v IND/SA: RR Lindwall (Mumbai BS), IWD Johnson (Kolkata), ID Craig (Johannesburg)."
Australia win the toss & bat.

When that Harris LBW was overturned. the aggrieved bowler's look of pained incredulity looked for all the world like he'd borrowed it from Shane Watson.

Close. MEW made the excellent point that ball tracking should be looked at first. That pitched outside leg.

So shirley Harris has to make runs in the 2nd innings to retain his spot??

Hostile stuff from Stokes, but weathered by Shrapnel.
England's slow over rate woes continue with just 25 in the 1st session.
Aus 1-45 at Tea.

That's possibly the hardest Marnus has ever had to work for a 50.
Tough, tough Test cricket.

I don’t know about for Australia, but Chris Cowdrey was supposedly a permanent appointment for England in 1988 and missed his second match through injury, he was never picked again. Barring serious injury or illness that certainly won’t happen to Cummins, but Australia could be on for their own Summer of the Four Captains…WideWally wrote:"Has a permanent captain ever before had to miss what would have been the second match of his captaincy?"skully wrote:Ric Findlay reports this is the first time since 1884-85 that Aus has had 3 different captains in 3 successive Tests.

Sturat gets GCS again, though in catching capacity this time, and with 86 more runs than his average in England a couple of years ago to his name.

GCS may be a bit of a grub but he did bat very well today. Possibly deserved a ton.

Re: Australia v England, 2nd Test (D/N), Adelaide, 16-20 December, 2021
Shame we fell one short of the Richie.
A slowish day's play. England bowled pretty well without luck. Their 2 wickets came from poorly executed shots. Harris's Test career is hanging by a thread.
Joss (Buses) Buttler had a day to forget, dropping Marnus twice. One COULD feel sorry for him, but would Englishmen feel sorry if Carey did the same - I think not.
Shrapnel batted quite brilliantly (dropped catches notwithstanding) against very good bowling. He was beaten numerous times, largely due to playing straight down the line of the ball, letting the English pronounced seam beat the bat.
His hardest working Test 50 to date. Warner was also very good. He'll be very annoyed at throwing away (what should have been) his 2nd successive Test 100 with a poor shot.
Aus did very well to survive the final 10 overs of the new ball without loss.
It will be 37C tomorrow when play starts. I don't envy England.

BTW On Fox Cricket's coverage, with Carey & Head playing in this series, there was a discussion about the previous test featuring 2 South Australians. Warne thought it would have been Lehmann & Gillespie but I am fairly sure that Callum Ferguson & Joe Mennie both debuted in that Hobart test against South Africa about 5 years ago & were promptly dropped for the next game.

Poor Joe Mennie. Destined to go down in Aus Test history along with the likes of Ken Eastwood, Paul Hibbert, David Ogilvey, Ashley Woodcock, Stuart Law (although he did OK), Phil Emery, Beua Casson, the non-Flipper Phillips, Callum Ferguson and Chadd Sayers, as one Test Aussies.

Ogilvie played more than one, surely.
Woodcock, Manou, Emery, Nicholson, Watkins maybe.
