Hypocrisy is as old as sport itself. We all love our own players who bend the rules/the accepted lines of sportsmanship, and hate our opponents’ bloody cheats, long may that continue!lardbucket wrote:‘If the shoe was on the other foot, I’d have to think if it was in the spirit of the game‘ - Ben Stokes 2/7/23
Pope, de Grandhomme.it’s not that long ago.
The hypocrisy is sickening.

A fair call, beams.
Although outright cheating (which the Jonny incident wasn't) makes my country feel sick. The fallout around the country from Sandpapergate was seismic. We all felt sick at what had transpired.

I thought we might see more of Bas and Growls so far in the Ashes, with an outside chance of Dello, LLL, Monkeh and even Demmy.
Shame really.
Would've loved Dello and Monkeh's lyrical waxing on the controversies and other stuff of this Test.

Yeah, obviously that one (sandpaper) massively overstepped the mark, from gamesmanship into blatant cheating, and I wouldn’t want any team I supported resorting to something like that.skully wrote:Norfolk Ian Goode wrote:Hypocrisy is as old as sport itself. Regarding yesterday, though, Australia have shown where the battle lines are to be drawn in this series, and I’ll be disappointed if we don’t Mankad someone at Headingley.

Actually the closest parallel to yesterday I can think of from some years back was Bell being run out/stumped in similar circumstances against India as they went off for tea, and India withdrew the appeal over the tea break.

Obviously not, oh no, nothing remotely like that. Mints OK though, and dirt in the pocket to change the condition of the ball, six bouncers an over for a whole session, even at the tail ...no problem, all within the spirit of the game.
Clueless.

Both sides did the bouncer stuff. Nothing in that comes close to sandpaper, and you know it. Skully was talking sense, which is more than I can say about 99% of your posts.lardbucket wrote:Norfolk Ian Goode wrote:Yeah, obviously that one (sandpaper) massively overstepped the mark, from gamesmanship into blatant cheating, and I wouldn’t want any team I supported resorting to something like that.skully wrote:Norfolk Ian Goode wrote:Hypocrisy is as old as sport itself. If you want to make this place an all-Australian echo chamber once and for all, you’re going the right way about it (no offence intended to the other, generally reasonable, Aussie posters).

Can we all agree that bowling of bouncers needs to be better policed?
I think the Umpires did a very poor job on failing to no ball bowlers from the two sides. Over rates from the teams were lamentable. The Umps needed to hurry both teams up.
I expect Broad may be fined for his celebappeals.

I think we all need to keep calm and carry on.
Clearly the controversy yesterday has stirred the blood of both English and Australian supporters. I understand the angst on both sides after such a great and close finishing Test.
And of course we don't want an echo chamber, beams. The last month this place has hummed along something akin to at least a semblence of the good ol' days.

I was going to start a thread to discuss the hierarchy of cheating/gamesmanship actions, and which ones people regard as totally unacceptable (the Sandpaper Scale?) Perhaps one for another occasion though!

I think you might get an inkling of why the likes of lardy and myself didn't find classic series like 05 and 09 compelling at the time (until after the dust had settled).
The way the result pans out has a huge bearing on we cricket lovers' moods and happiness.
I dare say if Stokes had've got England home, the headlines would've barely mentioned yesterday's controversy, and rightly so.
England still has the wood on Aus in the "winning from impossible positions" (Headingley more than once ) stakes, so all is not lost, mate.

Re: Jesus, this place is dead...
Come to think of it, we’ve never lost a close Ashes series as far back as I can remember. We’ve been thrashed every time at your place other than 86/87 and 10/11, and the home series have been won, drawn, or lost heavily. ‘05 was a hard-fought win over a great Aussie side, whereas ‘09 was a smash and grab against an ordinary one…
I’d settle for this one being close now, i.e. something to play for besides pride at the Oval. Strange how some think we’d be better off if we’d kept playing the brand of cricket that won us 1 Test in 17.

Aye. For all of Aus's dominance over the years, fortress England has been pretty unbreechable.
We've snuck a few drawn series but haven't won one since 2001.
You belted us in 2013 and 2015. The 2010-11 series in Aus was a real low point for us, England winning 3-1, with Cook impassable.
There's no doubt that Lords will galvanise England. It might be very spicy for the remaining 3 Tests. A win by England at Headingley will really set things up for a classic series.

When was the last Ashes series won by Australia in a decider?

Re: Jesus, this place is dead...
Most recent I can find is 1982-83 (sort of).
England were holders after the dreaded 1981 Ashes started by the horrendous Headingley debacle.
1st Test was drawn, Aus won T2 and T3, Eng won T4, so Eng needed to win T5 to retain. The match was drawn.

1936-7; Australia coming back from 0-2 to 3-2.
When we win, it’s historically been much more comfortable than that. When we’ve lost, at least in my time, it’s been by much smaller margins. The exceptions that stand out are 1977, 1978-9, 1985, and 3010-11. Some of the other losing away series have been decided, essentially, by two runs or 1 wicket.

Hello Norfolk Ian Goode
There have been no PMs from you to me any time recently.
I am here every day and night keeping a watch on Flaming Bails, so I do see any PMs that arrive. Perhaps you sent it to Dello?
I will endeavour to reactivate your "beamer" account.
Regards
Fromage
