Just a week into July and it’s already our third most prolific posting month of the year ... heading for 600 already, so I’m tipping 2000, not just 1000, especially given the likely momentum change in this Ashes series.

Who knows? Lovely to see old friends reappear, inc Furriner laughing at both our countries.

Much as I savour the floggings we dispense to England when they turn up in Oz, the Ashes are only consistently compelling and close when they are played in Pomgolia.

It is nice for us old folks to jaw away and when the Ashes are in England to argue the the toss.

Lever’s signature in years gone by was wonderful.

I think those names are a lot older than Wayne Rooney… I’ve seen them as fantasy football team names, poker handles etc.

The horse naming thing must be a tricky one to adjudicate. Hoof Hearted is pretty tame, but obvious, whereas they’ve apparently let racist ones through that they didn’t realise about (if you’re not familiar with a more obscure slur, you won’t spot it…) They also ban ones that could be confusing (e.g. “On The Stand Side”)!

Hoof Hearted was used for a 1981 Canadian filly, a 1993 French filly, a 2000 South African gelding, a 1995 Irish greyhound & a 2002 USA greyhound. I also thought it was used in Australia or New Zealand 30 or 40 years ago but I can't find mention of it.

Norfolk Enchants was a 2002 English greyhound (who had his name changed to Flag Flyers) and an Australian filly foaled in 2006.

And otherwise, yes - I suppose these are old jokes, reused recycled in part as the sport of getting joke names past relevant authorities.

Old jokes indeed - and older urban myths - recycled and elevated to permanent hilarity by the magic of the SBM.
And wow betide any lamp-post-climber who calls out their age or mouldiness.

Cruising at >700 posts so far in July, and it’s only the 10th. One thousand posts is dead meat. Not sure we’ll crack 2000; probably need Dozy to get stumped again for that.

Despite the recent slowdown, still looking good for >1000.

June and July have been easily the 'best' posting months in a year.

We've cracked 1,000 posts for the month for the first time since January 2021 (1,216 posts).

With a week and a Test to go, we might be a good chance of bettering that tally.

Best since September 2019 (the last Ashes in England). That month saw 1,662 posts.

I reckon we could've pushed that mark here but for the acrimonious behaviour of the English team, supporters and media to some controversy. It saw many of us in here - both Aus and English - shy away a bit for fear of getting into ugly spats with each other.

But clearly, a cracking Ashes series is the key to this place's ongoing survival.

We’ll have to try and match it this month with only 16.4-over cricket for our entertainment.

A shame we don’t even get a ThrAshes white-ball series as a World Cup warm-up.

Might be touch and go regarding a new nadir this month.

With under a week to go in Aghast, we sit on just 192 posts, still 12 short of the current record low of 204.
