Harbhajan Singh targeted again by Aussie spectators and media
After the Australian media made allegations on Harbhajan Singh of making inappropriate gestures at the spectators, the International Cricket Council cleared off Bhajji from these racial charges. The ICC completely rejected reports of racial gestures on the basis of the fact that no visual evidence is available.
Sydney ghosts has returned to haunt off-spinner Harbhajan Singh, when the Sydney Cricket crowd racially taunted him on Sunday March 2, 2008 in the first finals of the on-going Commonwealth Bank series. Harbhajan Singh was threatened to be brought back to Waterloo again, despite the bowler claimed the prized scalp of Matthew Hayden and Andrew Symonds.
Fingers were pointed out at Bhajji from different sections of the crowd and the Australian media. Bhajji found humself in a soup all over again for allegedly making inappropriate gestures and spitting at the direction of the crowd, after they provoked him by pointing at his turban and asking him to show his knot.
The Australian media said that Bhajji made monkey gestures towards the crowd by motioning as if to scratch his armpits with both hands in the same manner fans did to taunt Andrew Symonds back in India in 2007. The Sydney Morning Herald said that Harbhajan Singh could find himself in trouble with the International Cricket Council after he reportedly made monkey gestures towards the Sydney Cricket Ground crowd during India's victory in the first tri-series final yesterday.
Match referee -- Jeff Crowe -- investigated the allegations against the spinner. If Bhajji was found guilty, he would have been charged under clause 3.3 of the International Cricket Council's code of conduct. This clause within the ICC laws deals with racial abuse. This incident is the latest flashpoint between the two teams that has marred the Australian summer so far. However, the charge that Harbhajan made monkey gestures has been denied by the Indian team, with manager Bimal Soni rubbishing the charge.
Racial volley so far...
It all started in Sydney during the second test in January 2008, when the attempt to nail Harbhajan Singh began due to the constant nemesis of Australian skipper Ricky Ponting. The personal attacks continued whenever an opprtunity arose.
Another incident which added more fire to the on-going racial volley's was when Hayden mocked Harbhajan on Australia radio. Hayden called Bhajji an 'obnoxious little weed'. However, when the concerted attempts by the Aussie team and media failed, it seemed that it was left to the spectators to have a go next. India's tour down under is in its last leg but this incident has given the animosity between the two teams another fresh breath.
