Well Done Ian Bell!!!!!
Well done Ian Bell. Amazing stats have brought him the honour of being one of Wisden's 5 cricketers of the year:
778 runs in 11 Tests.
1080 runs in 33 ODIs.
Truely brilliant.

Re: Well Done Ian Bell!!!!!
Must average close to 40 in both forms of the game . . . pretty good for a pom.

I mean, yeah, I've obviously got a foc off grudge against him but I simply CANNOT FATHOM how EVERY PUNDIT seems to think he's the dog's bollocks, yet I surmise that not a single one of them would be able to mention a 'memorable innings' in that period of time. Bar possibly his match winning ton against India in an ODI. Big f*cking whoop.
I reckon I'm done, I really do. From now on, Ian Bell is a f*cking great batsmen.

Word.
(I added under pressure)
The stats freaks will however keep sharpening their knobs and point to the numbers.
Lest we forget .... 11 point fark all in 10 innings versus the Aussies in the 2005 Ashes ( included one knock of 60+)
Do the maths.
The kids sh!te (cept when others are also scoring big, the pressure's off the decks flat and the bowling's crap)

Well Merls, that's as spot on as it gets.
I bet next year he'll get the PFA 'Young' Player of the Year award for two 40's on a flat deck against Australia when their attack is most pop-gun.
He's only young, you know.

Mate, he'd have been in the Test team for the SA series if he'd had more ducks in the last 12 months than Inzi has had pies.
Re: Well Done Ian Bell!!!!!
Aye ... give the lad time ...
Oh bugger me .. I clean forgot, he's already played in 30+ tests already !!!

He could end up with one of the most mediocre test careers in history . . . 100+ tests at 40 . . . 80% of his runs against minnows/on flat decks . . . Gangulyesque . . .

Re: Well Done Ian Bell!!!!!
I'd rather he didn't.
But you see, Vawn really "likes" him .... 'nuff said.
And Vawn has vowed to be around as skipper (if wanted .. yeah bollocks ..if) till 2012 AD.
You note the problemmo, right?

Easter....US Masters coming up.....climax of EPL......start of AFL......somebody bitching about Wisden's 5CY choices with so much indignation you'd almost swear they matter.
Must be April.

Good to see Wisden maintaining their high standards. Wouldn't want to see their awards being 'cheaped', would we?Brass Monkey wrote:40 in the Tests, 33 in the ODIs.

Well, that's what I was getting at. Then Nerk came with his big daddy longstroke. Yeah, in essence they don't matter, but I just can't see what he's done to deserve some pretty illustrious company.
Re: Well Done Ian Bell!!!!!
I think Wisden have run out of decent candidates. Players can only be picked once, after all, and who else is there?

True. I'm not sure. Haven't checked out who's been one.

Re: Well Done Ian Bell!!!!!
Bell stood out as the England batsman who grew up, even if statistically he lacked the huge scores everyone continues to expect from him. It was in one-day cricket that he progressed the most, with an un-English strike-rate of 93. "It was hard to ignore the style," Lawrence Booth wrote. "The confidence placed in him as a senior batsman helped bring out that diminutive, almost impish, aestheticism; his cover-drive won the team's beauty contest hands down. The catches he has made at short leg, or at silly point when Monty Panesar has been bowling, have long indicated a ball-sense of world-class standard."
OH F*CKING SPARE ME. WHAT A LOAD OF BOLLOCKS.
F*CK YOU ALMANACK. F*CK YOU.

Re: Well Done Ian Bell!!!!!
To paraphrase:
"We stuck Ian Bell in because he's a loveable little scamp who's got some good-looking shots. OK, he underachieved for the 4th year in a row and OK, we lied about his S/R in ODIs. He's only 26 you know!"

Re: Well Done Ian Bell!!!!!
Bell, added Berry, was "on the cusp of greatness".
Oh yeah.
