Greatest innings by a number 11
I'm undecided between Devon Malcolm's towering effort at Sydney in 1994 and Pidge's 50... any other nominations?

What about Bob Willis' 171-minute 24* against Holding, Croft, Marshall and Garner at The Oval in 1980 which, with a little help from Peter Willey, salvaged a draw:

Peter Bedford, who played about 180 games with South Melbourne and won a Brownlow Medal in 1970 wearing the no 11 jumper, played many fine innings for Victoria but the best was probably his 300 partnership with Graeme Watson (also an ex-footballer) in the first game of the 69-70 season.

Nice story which facts should not interfere with.
Hurst had seven balls to face from Malone before he had to give a toss who was coming from the other end. If he was inm particularly good batting form he might have survived to ball 4.
The thing I remember most from Hurst in that game was the seven wickets out of twelve to fall, especially the second last one: Wally Edwards playing the ball on with his melon in similar circs to Rick McCosker at the same place 12 months later, and never playing for WA again. Doubtless George Gorrillasitch and the rest of the WA meeja would have reported that as a 'potentially great career sadly nipped in the bud...'

Re: Greatest innings by a number 11
I stand by my version , Fred ...confirmed to me by one of the players...and DKL was so annoyed at Hurst (who had made some stupid comments about Lillee in the lead up to the game) that he would have survived the Malone over and been given a single so that DKL could bowl at him.

At least he played in the match. Back in 1972/73, Saeed Ahmed was involved in a war of words with DKL & then pulled out of the third test to avoid facing him.

Re: Greatest innings by a number 11
When Saeed pulled out with 'Sydney hammy' they named third opener Mohammed Ilyas in the side to take his place. Ilyas took one look at the pitch and told them he had arranged to do the ironing that day, and both were sent home before the team left for NZ and neither played for Pakistan again.
Saeed was already 36 years old and about to announce his retirement. having been a fine servant of Pakistan cricket and playing about 35 Tests, but has disappeared from cricket since. Ironically, Ilyas returned to Sydney to play grade cricket the next season.

Re: Greatest innings by a number 11
It turned out Saeed had not much to worry about. Lillee bowled with fire and menace but his back was already playing up and the pitch wasn't nearly as dynamite as it was supposed to be, Massie in what was to be his last Test was reduced to 'stock bowler' status, Max Walker's big moment was still three days away, and Watkins we all know about. That masterful medium-pace bowling machine, Greg Chappell, took five-for. Both first innings were 300 plus, and in Astralia's second dig Massie and Watkins batted for three hours. The bloke the Paks eventually found to open the batting was Nasin ul Ghani, who was even older than Saeed, had no footwork and not many shots, made Boof look like Bruce Reid, and had not played Test cricket for seven years, but still ground out 6o-something in the first innings.

Didn't Underwood stick around for a long time for 40-odd holding off Lillee one time?

Re: Greatest innings by a number 11
I have a very vague recollection of seeing Ross Edwards take an absolute screamer at cover, diving horizontal to intercept a square slash by, probably, Sadiq Mohammad. Happy to be corrected. I know I was at the ground as a young tacker with the old man. We were in the old Sheridan stand.Fred Nerk wrote:It turned out Saeed had not much to worry about.
