Why do the Saffies lack that extra 5% belief?

It always seems that when it comes to the crunch, they are never quite able to believe that they can win the big games of cricket. Why? Is it something in the culture? Is it a hangover from past close defeats? The rugby team doesn't seem to have the same problem. What is it that makes their cricketers afraid to grab the big moments in matches?

I don't know this remains valid.

Most sides wilt under pressure, esp if a "won" match goes belly-up. Only Oz and India have shown greater resilience of late.

Twice in this match they've had the Aussies on the mat, only to let them get back on their feet. Firstly when they were batting and firstly Smith and Amla, and then Kallis and DeVilliers were cruising and looked like batting forever, and then today when the Aussies were 160-6 and in danger of setting South Africa only 300 in the 4th innings on an excellent pitch.

I'm not sure those are cases of bottling it, though.
