India this decade
was just thinking if it would be possible to get a team to tour us or to tour another country now that the pak series has been cancelled. so decided to see which teams have we not played recently and whether they are available. just realised we have only played 4 tests against the snoozies in this decade, which is ridiculously low
matches this decade
vs aus - 20
vs ban - 5
vs eng - 15
vs nz - 4
vs pak - 12
vs sa - 12
vs sl - 9
vs wi - 12
vs zim - 8
really need to play sl and nz a lot more often. we have a nz tour coming up in march, can we not have nz tour us early next year?

How can you fit that lot in when you have 'glorious IPL for make benefit of BCCI' to play? This must take precedence over such triviality as test match international cricket surely?

shock, horror, a national sporting body looks out for its own interest first.

Ah yes I can see that will amuse chippy colonial revenge seekers, but I would hope that in Indian cricket circles that isn't the agenda.

You've got me completely confused, JKL!
How can India playing a domestic tournament screw anyone else?

Because the BCCI have created a monster that threatens test cricket everywhere but India. They recently added a proviso that anybody signing for IPL must play the whole season thus creating a situation whereby they place IPL above test cricket because it will cause problems for whoever tours England in May.
English counties have always released players signed as overseas players to play test cricket, India is doing quite the opposite.

Are you sure?
I thought the IPL have now said clubs who lose players to International cricket can not sign temporary replacements thus making sides think twice before they sign a player who has a lot of international commitments. But its still up to the clubs themselves if they want to take this risk.
Not quite the 'players MUST play a whole season' scenario you have pointed out.

Er no, not exactly. They've said clubs won't be allowed to hire replacements like last year. Not really the same.

I'm sure you're wrong here. This way they might lose every international player. This seems to be a rather silly clause.
Can you give me the link where it says that IPL have added 'this' silly clause?

Re: India this decade
I can't find the full article but here's a snippet
"The critical issue for us is whether it is appealing enough for our club owners to have English players only for a few matches," Modi, told the Observer. "They must be there for a substantial number of games or for all the matches.
"Are the franchise owners happy for Kevin Pietersen to play a handful of matches and then go away? I don't think anybody would be happy with that. He wouldn't add any value and would be more of a disruption. It takes time to gel with team-mates and to become part of team strategy and implement that strategy."
Modi said it would have been different had the England players joined the IPL in the beginning, before its commercial rights were sold. "Their impact and market value would have been reflected in our broadcast rights or in the amount of sponsorship we could have sold. But we have sold those rights for ten years already. So we in the IPL do not benefit from their addition to the league."
Sean Morris, the Professional Cricketers' Association chief executive, said he will discuss the matter with the England players and then talk to the ECB. "Kevin Pietersen and Andrew Flintoff are keen to play in the IPL, so they will not be very happy with this news," Morris said. "But they are pawns in a game of international politics between the two boards. Everyone says you need to create an official window in the international cricket calendar to let the IPL happen. What I'm seeing is the manipulation of Test teams."

Re: India this decade
It will effect every touring team to England whilst the IPL operates as it does, not just England.
It is the manipulation of test cricket, no better phrase to use.

Meh, even there Modi's giving his personal opinion. Clubs are free to hire English players, english players are free to play for the teams. International cricket is free to run as it wants to.

Re: India this decade
Nowhere does it say that international players have to play for the entire tournament.
And of course it depends upon the franchises to buy a player who they are sure would play only 4-5 matches every year!! I don't think they'll be happy to sign a player for just 4-5 matches every year!
But most of the Australians were here last season just for 4 matches. They might not play a single match any particular year and might be available for the entire tournament the other year. So I don't think they'll be chucked out because of international duties.
You'll get to see this year.
