Best side for each decade.
Could be an interesting discussion. Let's get a side for each decade including 5 reserve players to make a squad of 16 for each decade. Then we can see which decades are the best and perhaps rank them at the end.
The reserves will preferably include a replacement 'keeper, replacement opener, replacement spinner, replacement batsman and replacement fast bowler but variations are allowed if justified.
So, to kick us off, 2000-2008 (yes, I know it's not a full decade) would probably be:
Hayden
Langer
Ponting
Tendulkar
Lara
Kallis
Gilchrist +
Flintoff
Pollock
Warne (c)
McGrath
Reserves for this decade:
Trescothick
Dravid
Murali
Boucher
Steyn
I've got to say, that's quite a start! Attacking openers, unbelievable middle order, three class all-rounders (5 if you include Gilly and Warne!) and a bowling attack of pace, spin, and deadly accuracy. That side will take some beating! I know Steyn hasn't properly proven himself but I can't think of a better quick in the last eight years, the man's phenomenal and he's proven himself on the sub-continent already. Good reserves to back them up too.
That middle order is just about peerless. There'll be others to compete but hell, Ponting, Tendulkar, Lara and Kallis coming in one after the other! Enough to give even SF Barnes and his side nightmares.

I'm not sure how people will agree with me, I think the talking points will be Stewart as keeper and the inclusion of Gary Kirsten. Just think Kirsten had the technique for the stroke makers to play off. McPidge isn't there either, but I like the left arm of Wasim, Ambie's extra bounce and Donald's tearaway pace. Warne was easily the best spinner in the 90's, the Murali debate comes in after about 1998 IMO.

Re: Best side for each decade.
Should we make a rule that a player can't be in two teams? Lara, Warne, Sachin etc have to be in the decade where they performed best?

Would love to include the superman but can't find a place. I don't think he is better than Pollock.

Lara Lara Laughs wrote:What?
Waqar Younis. Pakistan. Fast Bowler. Probably the best yorker of a batsman I've seen. Only Big Bird makes it debatable IMO.
Glenn McGrath. Australia. Fast-medium Bowler. Loud mouthed shit, bit more pace and bounce back then, quality as always.
Musthaq Ahmed. Pakistan. Leg Spinner. Cracking googly, lofty little chipmunk.
Ian Healy. Australia. Wicket-keeper. Best keeper of the decade, probs. Alright bat. The batting's strong as it is, could prob accomodate him.
Michael Slater. Australia. Opener. Quality, used to get himself out too much. / Graham Gooch. England. Opener. Old chubby squeakyish Essex wideboy Mockney batsman extroadinaire, esp. for someone so old.

Sehwag over Langer is a gigantic joke, but apart from that, agreed.

Yeah, thought long and hard about De Silva or Boon, in the end I went for Kirsten. Now I'm not so sure, especially with how well Gooch did. I'd probably have all three before him.
