English County Season 2009 Thread
May as well kick it off, with the news that Direbyshire have signed the Slaw man for one day cricket.

Fingers crossed that Glamorgan can Cement their place in the middle of Division 2...

Re: English County Season 2009 Thread
Not plenty to say really - some of the younger players like Tom Brett, Graeme White, David Willey and Mark Nelson are doing pretty well in Aus Grade cricket AFAIK.
The triumvirate of gash should hopefully be replaced by Jack Brooks, Ryan Cummins and Lee Daggett. They could become the new breed of the ToG.
That's all.
Big news spring as usual!!!!!!

Re: English County Season 2009 Thread
What is the point, I mean WHAT IS THE POINT of Direbyshire signing a 41 year old former Aussie to play one day games only?? It's not like Law is even that good an influence for young players. In fact he's a heavy drinker who is renown for his arrogance and makes just as many enemies as friends.
Absolute bollocks. The counties are going too far with these ridiculous signings.

In fact JKL you might be able to confirm this, but wasn't one of the reasons Law fell out with people in high places at Essex because he was proving to be a bad influence on the younger players with his late night drinking sessions?

Yup. As well as Ronnie Irani being a bit of a cock.
To be fair to Slaw, he was great for us on the pitch but during the latter part of his time here we were a very poor side and it was said he was having a bad influence of a bunch of struggling young players. Scored 2 tons against Murali for Essex at Lancs and on that showing they snapped him up.

Re: English County Season 2009 Thread
The last I saw, Law is still a pretty good bat at county level. And he can bring ina lot of experience of the game and its placings and tactics and turns - including winning a rare Banjo Shield as Q-Skipper.
Not sure he's that disruptive an influence, tbh. That often smacks of pretext rather than reason. I think Lancs' decision was based mainly on anno domini and creaky joints. Clearly, Derby won't have gained an athletic fielder at cover or in the deep. But he can catch.
So, I don't know. He could be a transitional consolidating influence. And I would be surprised if he doesn't make a few decent scores.

The news on Jonah is that he should be bowling before the end of our pre-season tour to S.A.
Imran Arif has got his UK passport sorted out, and Ashley Noffke has been passed fit to join us next month.
Bearing in mind we stank the place out the last time we were in Division 1, I settle for 7th this season. The batting does little to reassure me. Moeen starts the season at 5 in Hicky's berth. Behind him there's Alex Kervezee, then Dave Wheeldon, Omar Ali and James Shannon

I really have no idea what the 'rey are up to- but I'm sure there's something magnificent bubbling away there.
I did go to the Oval the other day and saw in big lights - "want to be as good as Mark Ramprakash?" - advertising their coaching for kids.
...and average 27 in test cricket? I really hope kids are more ambitious than that. They can at least aspire to be as good as John Crawley.

forgot that was even going on tbh. Re- chambers... maybe. Seems to be another one with fitness problems.
He'll get the chance though with Napier out of the attack.
God the rest of the team looks bobbins with no Cook,Bopara or Napes. All we have to look forward to are the superstar signings of Matt Walker & John Maunders

I didn't even know Matt Walker had joined Essex. Suppose he's a solid middle-order bat who'll probably chip in some decent runs. Not exactly looking to the future, but what can you do?
Chambers 3-24 against Lancs in the previous match too...

Re: English County Season 2009 Thread
Aye, I saw that.
We're a strange bunch at Chelmsford - I'm sure other teams play us in one day cricket , look at our team & think what a pile of shoite. And then end up getting beaten.
We are the NewZzzzzealand of county cricket. How low can you aspire?

Are we in a classic abusive relationship continuing to enthuse about a set-up that threatens to destroy our national game?

Too much cricket: The championship is ok as it is. Too much one day stuff though. We just need a 50 over competition and the 20/20 as it is currently organised.
A minimum of four under 25 players to play in every championship side - all England qualified.

2 twennytwenny tournaments is an utter joke. of course, one of them was supposed to be EPL. It'll only take 5 years for the ECB to save face and realise the format is being overplayed.

Re: English County Season 2009 Thread
Not a huge amount going on at Notts.
Out go Rob Ferley (back to Kent) and Leicestershire shock the world by signing an Englishman in AJ Harris.
The Browns, Jason and Ali come in from Northants and Slurrey respectively, and Adam Voges is back again as the overseas.
Samit didn't go on the pre-season trip to Portugal, officially presumably on account of his recent return from Snoozerland, though unofficially apparently so he has some time to reflect on his exclusion from the full England squad, and the both barrells attention he is going to get from team-mates and opposition alike. Word is he allowed his England recognition to go to his head, and put a few noses out of joint in the Notts dressing room when he returned for the end of last season with a Billy Big Balls attitude.
Going to be a tough season for him now. Hopefully he's got the message, gets fit, and answers the jibes with some early season runs...

rubbish Bas...too much cricket is never enough...tho quality is the real issue...our domestic season was fiercely fought by all States ... and a number of players have emerged with reputations enhanced...the english comp with the os players should in theory be producing cricket of a high standard...
