Alternative?

See what I mean Skulls.

We have had this debate before, either can be used.

I'm sorry that can't. Unfortunately some people don't understand these because they don't understand the distinction between the two and why it's essential to use them correctly and not interchangeably.

I wouldn't have to if your literacy levels were up to scratch. Your use of alternate in that context conjures up possiblities you probably didn't intend. And let's get this straight, the two cannot be used interchangeably.

My fark ups are usually typos. He genuinely believes that you can use alternate and alternative as if they mean the same. I overlook most spellos I see but when someone blatantly tries to argue something that is wrong, he's asking for it.

You didn't specify the context. Directors are not unique to the corporate world last time I checked.

The bottom line is that Taipan has never quite grasped the difference between alternate and alternative.

Although UK authorities disapprove, in US usage, “alternate” is frequently an adjective, substituted for the older “alternative”: “an alternate route.” “Alternate” can also be a noun; a substitute delegate is, for instance, called an “alternate.” But when you’re speaking of “every other” as in “our club meets on alternate Tuesdays,” you can’t substitute “alternative.”

Sometimes ignorance allows a misuse to come into common usage.

But I can't envisage Red to be the bender somehow ... Red has actually been polite to me in the past ... which is most unusual for anyone on this board, let alone the bending-tail !!

Or how words are distorted so that the language loses its sense of nuance and the usefulness of certain words to perform their functions of denoting unique usage which helps to convey more specific meaning.
